Engine beds for Hess cutter

Does anyone have experience building engine beds/ mounts? I'm
building a Hess 30 ft. cutter in wood. Hess called for a 18 hp Sabb [
aprox 400 lb] I plan on useing a Sabb 22 hp [860 lb] Hess showes
his engine mounted on athwartships planks, Bolted to the frames. I
think it should mounted on built-up floors

Engine beds for Hess cutter

My project is a 30 foot Glen-L 'Francis Drake' cutter in 'glass. The
plans specify an engine of between 10 - 20 hp; I'm thinking of using
the various 3 cylinder Kubota derrivations from Beta/Universal/Phasor
rated at nominally 22 HP (about 230 lbs).

These plans (and my contruction) have floor timbers at 18" intervals
spaning the bilge. The engine beds are two, 1.5" net glass covered
wood (vg fir "2 X 10" in my case) rabeted into the floor timbers
(runing longitudinally) and spaced to accommodate the engine. Into
this one bolts gusseted 'L' brackets of galvanized steel onto which the
motor mounts are attached.

A picture may be worth a thousand words; email me off list if
interested.
