Curious, wheel steering , pedestal ,,,
 

This is a curious question. I was looking at a very nice boat that has a
very nice tiller for steering. Then, I saw another boat which was the same
model that had a wheel, pedestal for steering.

How much do the pedestal, wheel, thingys cost? Just curious.

I built a pedestal wheel and telescoping tiller arm from plumbing
scraps, a dead electric motor rotor and steel cable that cost me about
50 bucks alltogether, including the steering deck that sat over the
rudder head.

It worked good, about 3 1/2 turns lock to lock for + - 45 degrees
rudder deflection, plenty.

An Edson kit for my HR28 would have gone 3K minimum.

You can expect to pay somewhere between $2000 and $3500 for the parts of a
basic wheel conversion depending on boat size and steering model. If you
want to go deluxe high tech expect to spend over $12K..

Exactly right. Then think about the ergonomic issues relating to your
ability to tend sheets and sail controls while you are stuck behind
the wheel in the back of the boat. For boats up to about 35 feet or
so I'd vote for the tiller. You are going to want a good autopilot in
any case.
