I've enjoyed all the replies to this OP, but somewhat seriously, has any
one built a personal sized SUB, say 4 person cap. With a max dive depth of say 40 feet or so, this should be do able, no? Maybe I just read too much of the "Mad Scientists" series growing up. You might do further research by contacting the University of Florida. I
know they've built small-capacity submarines in their mechanical engineering department. It may be a good place to start looking. Brian "Dan" wrote in message ... Try looking at this site: giffordmarineinc.com These guys are building
their own (non-nuclear) sub. "Dan" wrote in message ... I've enjoyed all the replies to this OP, but somewhat seriously, has any one built a personal sized SUB, say 4 person cap. Quite a few sites out there concerning building a submarine. Unlike boats
there are specific and unique issues pertaining to pressurization/hull strength, window thickness/materials (the fewer windows the better IMHO but that will depend on application), internal oxygen/air/atmosphere. Do a Google search for terms like: submersible, personalsubmarine. Be prepared to buy or locate one to three very specialized and expensive texts pertaining to submarine design/engineering. Its worth it. The topic of designing and engineering portals for submarines is worth studying very dilligently and in great detail and for very obvious reasons. Something along the lines of neutral buyonacy is really what you strive for in a submarine body. Loosely speaking: "you dont want it to float, you definitely dont want it to sink". There is a guy who designed a sub that has a nice emergency recovery system that brings the submarine back to the surface in the event of an emergency. Look a around a bit for that site. I believe that he also amassed a great deal of knowldege about portal engineering. Nuclear power? Perhaps you might consider the hydbrid of diesel + thermonuclear power (?) based on Strontium-90 which has a long half-life and decays into non-radioactive Zirconium. I didnt say that Strontium-90 was cheap, did I? See: http://www.psubs.org/ Among other things, maybe look for a reference called "Pressure Vessels". There should be a link on PSubs. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dan" Newsgroups: rec.boats.building Sent: Sunday, January 25, 2004 9:22 AM Subject: Building a nuclear submarine I've enjoyed all the replies to this OP, but somewhat seriously, has any one built a personal sized SUB, say 4 person cap. I understand the better models have a 'hand crank' mechanism attached to the
prop to serve as a back-up in case of battery failure or reactor melt-down! Also, the lead underpants is another good option when ordering! paul Quite a few sites out there concerning building a submarine. Now the Phoenix is a class act. And at only $78M it is a bargain. Beware
of the advertising though, I know from experience that at depths greater than 450ft it is still possible to enjoy the gentle rolls of a nice north Pacific storm, say 30+ degrees each way. You may ride out a bit of a blow but the bad ones will get you anyway. Brian |

We were at 400 ft and taking 40+ degree rolls in the "Med", long, long ago
in the "Cold War.". "Brian Combs" wrote in message ... Now the Phoenix is a class act. And at only $78M it is a bargain. I did a short stint with Perry Oceanographics (as a programmer).
I may still have some of the drawings for one of the subs. ![]() Richard |
