New Poster - Rules?

Hello,

This is the first time I have been to this newsgroup. What are the rules
regarding mentioning ("advertising") of boatbuilding-related services? I
don't want to offend anyone.

Regards,
Kevin

Usually, if it is innocuous, like my sig below, no-one moans, If you preface
every post with "Well, in my business insert liink to you site here we do
things THIS way....." then you may get flamed.
Most folks here are understanding, since a lot of us are in the business, but
blatant self-promotion usually gets some attention.

If you keep in mind the newsgroup is for discussing boatbuilding topics,
not advertising products or services, you should be okay. If you are
offering products or services for free that's okay. Everybody offers free
advice and opinion.

In a word, don't. Be generous with advice and problem solving, but
actively soliciting business or offering any product for sale is a
definitely frowned upon. You can, however, answer questions about any
product or service you have to offer...and, as Steve said, include a
link and/or other contact information for your company in your signature.

I think you'll discover that the main benefit of participating online is
the knowledge you'll gain from interacting with so many people in so
many different places, who have so many different perspectives and
needs....problems to solve, and experiences to share. The 10+ years I've
spent online have exposed me to literally thousands more problems--and
sometimes VERY creative solutions to them that actually work--than I'd
ever have seen in just my own "back yard."

Welcome aboard!

Don't sweat it. We all offend someone sooner or later. Just don't be too
blatant and you'll. There are holier-than-thou protocol Nazis here, just
as on every forum. Ignore their inevitable wails and move on.

If you are here to ask or answer questions about boat building,
welcome. If it becomes apparent that you are only here to sell your
services and products, even if you cleverly veil your ads, most here
will put you on a mental list of companies not to do business with.
All in all, we are a pretty serious news group with folks who are
concerened that the right message gets out. It is not like a candle
making class where bogus advice could make the colors all run
together, if someone gives bogus advice here, it could possibly cost
someone their life. If you are here to participate, you will be
welcomed, if you are only here to take, you will probably be dismissed
and ignored... and we will know;) Cause we all stayed at holiday inn's
last night! That's what we get for mixing epoxy over mum's clothes
