How much play is allowable between the strut and shaft on an old 165hp

I'm not sure what you mean when you state "strut". If you mean the P bracket
that contains the cutlass bearing, then the answer is "zero". Sounds like
you need a new cutlass bearing. Also check the shaft for wear.
