I have it in my mind to build a modest floating dock.
I have found my retirement Valhallah, "Cherry Mountain Beach." We close as soon as title search comes clean. 4.5 acres of secluded mountainside, with trails, 500 feet of sandy river beach, no poison ivy, 2br, 2lr mini home, greenhouse by the shore, cows for nearest niegbours but for about 1/2 a mile away, great hotel resteraunt a mile away, etc, etc. We can't afford it, but who wants to die a millionaire, eh? Anybody want to rent a week on the beach? I'll live on the boat and give sailing lessons! OOOEEE! I'm going to plant 100 cherry trees, to start. The birds'll get so sick of cherries, maybe we'll get some. I wonder if anyone has tried old pallets and pop bottles? If you have ever tried to salvage boards from an old pallet, you might think this the best possible free material, made with proudly Canadian junk hemlock lumber, free for the asking. I would need to bring it in in the fall, as winter ice has already mangled a 100+ year old 20 by 50 foot stone wharf ruin on my waterfront. I will float the new dock just down river from the antique stonepile, where it's all silted in out to where it drops off to 30 feet deep, and bring one pallet at a time ashore for hockey season. The sections will be tied together with Canada Tire polypropelene 3/8" profinish double braid 'cause it's sooooo cheap, or hinges, and will include a narrow walkway to a couple of 1/2" x 4' x 8' plywood deck sections, tied with rope through holes drilled in pallets and decking, to start. A chain would restrain the head of the outermost part to the stone pile. We have a pretty constant 3kt current (approx), offshore. The cold salty tide comes in under deep, warm fresh water, thanks to the reversing falls at St. John, NB. Anyone tried something like this? Any chance it could hold together? I have a 6" tide, and occasional (twice a year?) ocean traffic, tugs and barges, etc. Ask me if I like the place. We'll be there for the coloured leaf season. Any holiday travellers looking for an air mattress crash pad, autumn tenting, B'n B, whatever? Bring furniture! Next year, y'all come! -- Terry K - My email address is MY PROPERTY, and is protected by copyright legislation.
