Seat Boxes

Hi All

I want to make a couple of seat boxes from Aluminium to replace the
existing pedestal seats. The idea is to house the batteries in one and
use the other for extra storage. I will then mount the seats onto one
end and hey presto "less wasted space". My problem is however how
thick is strong enough for the Aluminium plate. I was hoping to get
away with 5 mm plate? The boxes will be approximately 410 mm high x
360 mm wide x 650 mm long and have cuts outs on one side 400mm x 300
mm to allow access as required. What have you seen or built.

All feedback will be appreciated
Regards & thanks

thats probably sufficient... altho, a poor design could jeopardize the
safety. Are you welding these? The long cut outs will take away from any
structural strength making the box more likely to "twist".

I am not a designer... however, some years back I had an aluminum
diamond plate box made to fit behind the seat of my CJ-7 cause we were
driving out to Indy for the race and needed a strong box for stuff
over the weekend. I would guess from memory that this stuff was not
but 3-4mm at best and held the weight of three good size dudes and a
couple of cases of Corona when we made a run out of the city. What a
cool town at race time.
