test a depth sounder out of the water?

This test won't tell if the sounder works but it will disclose transducer
defects. Turn the system on and place a wet finger on the "wet" end of the
transponder. If you do not feel a slight buzz the transducer is probably
toast.

This seemed like such a *cool* idea!

So I walked round to the boats, and tried it out on two working
transducers. Nothing.

Pity!
