Not quite as high tech as Harken and Lewmar and a bit on the heavy side but
VERY strong, reliable and practically engineered. Best of all nobody can
touch their prices and they really stand behind their products. .

What do you think about an old time, family owned, tool & die shop run
by a bunch guys whose ancesters imigrated from the Fatherland, in the
best German tradition?

They are about 10 miles from me, neat bunch of people.

I agree with Glen. I replaced the mainsheet system on my GS41 with Garhauer
for about half the price of the competition 2 years ago and am very happy
with it.

I have a radar mast from them. It tilts manually with a very
trouble-free screw arrangement. The satinless steel is on the heavy
side, and if I could afford it I would replace the column itsle fith a
carbon-fiber spinaker pole section, just to cut down on the pitching
weight at the end of the boat.

I have never had any trouble from the Garhauer stuff. It has been
installed for four seasons.

Would you paraphrase this as "ideal for cruisers"?

Who, of course, can always use the fancy, lightweight expensive stuff
at the top of the mast or wherever should they wish to race...

Personally, I race as crew, and value strength and most of all
durability. I "cruise" as a skipper in pretty heavy weather and
although I have an old '70s IOR "cruiser-racer", I cruise as if I'm
racing, which means I push the boat sometimes.

So the durability question trumps the weight aloft situation, although
I respect that's an important racing consideration.

It's 90% Lewmar/Harken/Ronstan here in Toronto. Very rarely have I
seen Garhauer/Antal/other products, although I do see Wichard shackles
and Spinlock jammers and so on.

What is anyone's experience with ordering Garhauer stuff online?

Rhys,
I ordered my parts online, and with a phone call to Garhauer, was able to
put together a very nice adjustable traveler system. Someone had previously
removed the traveler track and put on a diamond shaped cast pad eye, that;
when I took off the mainsheet blocks, I found was cracked!
All I could figure was the guy didn't want to spend the money replacing the
track and associated gear, so he half-assed it instead.
Hate to be on the receiving end if that padeye had let go....

I'll have to agree with everyone else. I use almost all Garhauer products in
outfitting the running rigging on my Ingrid 38.

I was initially drawn to them by a report in Practical Sailor regarding
their line control clutches. Once I saw the prices and quality of their
other products, it was a "no contest".

I still have to order my ridged boom vang from them. However their staff has
been very helpful in working up a custom design for this.. The price will be
less than $400 and that includes all the hardware and line.

Maybe I shouldn't mention it here, but to date, they have never charged me
shipping costs and they always ship UPS and it arrives in 3-4 day.

Thanks for the recommendation. I am flying an assymetrical for the
first time this year and want new blocks PLUS I want to increase the
mechanical advantage on my "Easy block" traveller set up for the
smaller wife to handle...gotta take the helm some time!
