painting yanmar engine block

I have a yanmar 1gm10. Due to various leaks and such there are a few areas
of the engine block that have rusted and need repainting. What do I use and
how do I go about it?
Thanks Boris

You can probably buy matching touch up paint from a Yanmar dealer.

Otherwise, do a google search on high temperature engine paint.

Clean the rust off as best you can. I found a great assortment of small,
oddly shaped wire brushes for a Dremel tool on E-Bay, cheap, and very
handy for cleaning off the curves and pockets of the engine/manifold
casting.

Vacume up the mess.

Prime and paint with high temp paint.

Safety glasses and a mask are a good idea when using the Dremel :)

Hey Boris...
I run a yacht maintenance business and a charter business "Mariner
Sailing Charters"in Marina del Rey, California
This is how it is BEST done!
1. Remove all grease with laquer thinner and a rag.
2. Scrape off all loose and flakey rust, using old slot screwdivers
(for tight places) old chissel, toothbrush sized metal
wirebrushes(available at any ship's chandlery)
3. Treat the rust!!!! Use phosphoric acid. "Ospho" is one brand and
"West Marine" has one too. Chemically change the iron oxides(rust) to
iron phosphates. (Inert)! Just spay it on and wipe up the excess the
next day(it takes overnight)
4.Wipe up the excess Ospho with a rag and paint! Any paint that you
like the color of! It does not have to be spray paint either but you
better know how to handle a brush!

High temp paint is a waste of money. Only the exhaust pipe gets that
hot and it is under a fiberglass wrap, protected.....The rest of the
engine only gets around the temp of the water and oil...about 170
degrees max! I think Yanmar paint is about 26 dollars U.S. a can what a
rippoff....buy it for an exact color match only for it is not "High
Temp"...and by the way....try spraying "high temp" on your cars
muffler(really hot) and watch it burn off.....raw exhaust temps are
about 2500 degrees...

Whilst I agree about not needing high temperature paints for engine blocks
( hopefully they don't get to even 10o Celsius) you need to re-think the
exhaust pipe temperatures. Perhaps it's a typo, but 2500 is just a little
high .....
