Best type of paint

Do any of you have suggestions or opinions regarding the best type of paint
(urethane, epoxy, gel coat, etc) to refinish the topsides of a gel coated
hull?

Thanks,
Bob Swarts

I used a plain polyurethane "spar" varnish with UV inhibitors on the
topsides of a dull metal flake polyester glass hull, and on an old
plain polyester glass hull. Short term, the results are cosmetically
excellent.
Ask again in 2 years.

Thanks, but I actually need to color the topsides.

It depends entirely on your standards and expectations.
If you want the gloss and longevity of the original gelcoat and will do
a lot of work om the preparation, then two-part poluyrethane paint
(interthane, awlgrip) systems are the choice.
If gloss doesn't matter and you'll tolerate more rapid weatrhering and
lower scuff toughness, then the various urethane-modified alkyd
paints(Brightside, Toplac) will do.
If you want it to have a discenable color and weather well, acrylic
latex housepaint will do.

Epoxy paints are tough paints for garage floors. They don't weather
well. Easypoxy is not an epoxy.

Interlux has a very good 'multi-media' presentation at :

http://www.yachtpaint.com.

They've a fairly new product which is intriguing: 'Perfection' a
two-part "hassle free" LPU. By this I mean the solvents / reducers are
'in the can', so all one has to do is mix and paint. (Compare this to
other two-part paints - including Interlux's legacy product 'Interthane
Plus', US Paint's 'Awlgrip' or Epifanes 'Poly-Urathane' - which require
the *precise* addition of solvents / reducers to insure proper
flow-out).

My experience is with the three products mentioned within the
parenthesis above. Of the three, Awlgrip was the easy winner.
Starting over today, I'd definitely give the 'Perfection' a try.

Latex house paint? I have used this on a plywood scow I built, and it worked
pretty well, but as an overcoat for fiberglass?

two part polyurethane - sometimes known as LPU (polyester polyurethane) are
the best
next down are two part acrylic polyurethanes

urethanes often go over an epoxy primers as the weakest link with 2 part
urethanes is their bond.

another option is an enamel etc. tocoated/sealed with a clear 2 part
polyurethane.

2 part polys should cost $70-$110 or so per gallon - but if you buy by name
i.e. awlgrip expect to pay a lot more.

It all depends on your standards. How low are they?

Depends. Are we still talking about boat paints?

100%acrylic latex exterior house paint works beautifully over gel
coat.  It can be touched up years after painting without the touchup
showing.  Your local paint store can match any color.br
