Adirondack Guide-Boat - Glued-Lapstrake
 

I hope to start building an Adirondack Guide-Boat in January. I plan
on using glued-lapstrake construction (using the "Grant-lap" to get a
"smooth skin"), as opposed to strip-building. I have yet to find any
references on the internet where anyone has actually built a
guide-boat using glued-lapstrake. Any thoughts on the feasibility of
this method for building a guide-boat?

The original adirondack Guideboats were clinker-built. There was a
fellow on Long Island, NY (patchogue, as I recall) who back in the
70's took a mold off a guideboat he inherited from his grandfather,
and that was a lapstrake boat. Did a good job, too. He's not in
business anymore; sure wish I could get my hands on the mold! I was
his ad agency. Didn't get paid, didn't get a boat. Didn't even get a
picture of one!

What is "Grant-lap?"
