Height to mount a spinnaker pole ring
All, I have a Catalina 310 and want to mount a spinnaker pole ring. A
car appears to be out of the question as I have an electrical track that runs up the front of the mast. I have a Forespar pole ring that I can mount to the mast. One suggestion I got for mounting height was to put it at eye level. For most of the time it would be used to pole out my genoa (I have a 135) with occasional flying of a spinnaker. Ideas on height? |

A height that's good for poling out a genoa will probably be too low for a spinnaker. "About eye level" is not a bad guide; it depends a lot on how tall you are and doesn't take into account the size of the spinnaker. But it should be somewhere in that area for an average sizes person on a 30- ish ft cruiser-racer. You can get a more precise idea by looking at a sailplan of the boat that includes the spinnaker luff. A Catalina dealer should be able to get you one, or you can call Catalina yourself and ask to speak with Gerry Douglas. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |

Consider a whisker pole for the genoa, and a spinnaker pole for a spinnaker. Anyway, you'll need two different heights, therefore two rings. Unroll, or hoist the genoa, and put the pole on it and push it out. Keep it level, and mark where it should go on the mast. When using the pole, it should be level.
