A new friend Jamie, a diver who lives in Thailand sent me a IJN saki
bowl he salvaged from the Tattori Maru. Thats the Japanese hell ship
my Grandfather was shipped to Japan on with 1100+ other men.

The bowl arrived in 5 pieces... but I was able to glue them together
quite nicely.

The Tattori Maru was sunk by the USS Hammerhead in 43.

Not sure what to do with it. But I bet no Japanese has any relics from

One of my sailing students is the son of a survivor or the
Indianapolis.
Some of the stories I heard were amazing. Most of what is written
in the books down plays the horror of fighting off shipmates who were
hallucinating.

This guy was big. I can believe his old man survived. If I was a
shark I'd run away if I saw him coming. I've been reading some
of the survivor accounts. Quite interesting.

I was thinking the same thing once it arrived..that it's full of bad
JuJu.

Everyone on board was most likely killed when she went down, and the
many many American that died and suffered in her holds from Corrigador
to japan. And someone was sipping Saki out of it at the time.

However the Captain of the Tottori Maru seemed to be a descent man
pressed into a horrid service for his country. He was credited with
out manuvering a sub and having torpedos pass near by saving all
aboard. And he let the American's use a flag he had to honor dying men
as they were buried at sea.

There is a preacher still alive here in the USA who was aboard on
that trip, I'll ask him what he thinks should be done with it. Then
again I may make a small shadow box type display for my office.

What a mess that whole deal was..and what a nightmare at sea to go
through.

They played a key part in history and defeating the Japanese. The
secret nature of the mission killed more than any one thing. Also IIRC
the Skipper was given a bum rap and blew his brains out on his front
porch.
