New Zealand outlaws smacking of children

New Zealand effectively outlawed smacking children on Wednesday...
"It is about our children and what I believe is their God-given right to
grow up secure in the love of their family, valued as equal citizens to the
rest of us and without the constant threat of legalised violence being used
against them," the law's sponsor, Sue Bradford of the Green Party, said in
parliament.

The law change, first proposed in 2005, had been strongly opposed by
conservative family and church groups, who said it would make criminals of
parents.

Opponents held public marches and rallies outside parliament.

Mainstream church groups and child welfare organisations had strongly
supported the change.

Typical of most such laws, the interpretation of what constitutes "smacking"
is anyone's guess.

Hey..makes as much sense as not smacking them..might as well drown them
if they;'re going to take away parents rights to raise their
children...they'll all grow up to be spoiled brats...good thing they
live on a little island...maybe someone will put a fence up around it to
keep them in once they're ruined...maybe they should import some
officials from Bangkokj to straighten them out...maybe we should export
willow switches under the guise that they're a decorative item...(I'm
taking a swift approach to this problem...)

What if one good smack at the right time is all that is
needed to straighten out a kid.

This is another example of liberalism at it's worst. Parents
won't stop smacking their kids if they deserve it. And worse
what happens if the kids call the cops. If I was a parent and
they did that, I'd say sure, your take him and support him.

Beating a child is never effective as a solution to behavior problems. While
outlawing it is stupid, the concept of doing it is also stupid.

A quick swat on the butt for a baby/toddler might be excessively harsh and
painful. Hitting a child is never a good idea.

Since the definition of "child" encompasses teens, I'd disagree. Both my
mother and father spanked me--Dad with his bare hand, and Mom with one of
Dad's oak fraternity paddles--and it was an effective attitude readjustment
every time. As a result of the spankings I became neither a child-abuser
with my own daughter, nor did I develop any antipathy for my parents. To
the contrary, I gained respect for their word and their rules. I had it
coming.

Benjamin Spock wrote--over 30 years ago--that spanking a child is tantamount
to abuse, and will result in children becoming sociopathic. So America quit
paddling the kids. The net result has been several generations of adults
who cannot or will not accept authority of any form. Many of these adults
are uniformly unsuccessful in their lives.

Poor Jeff Coppes, contact lens sales associate. Couldn't even get through
REAL
medical school. Now he has a contact lens business with two locations. Not
even
on his own, and not in a high traffic mall. His two locations are shared
by a
group of losers who couldn't make anything of themselves on their own. How
sad
is that? Is he on food stamps, too?

I've seen his photo online. He looks like Archie Bunker except with
absolutely
no color and NO facial muscle tone. In other words, he's a puff pastry,
not a
man. His stories of fast cars, motorcycles and such smack of even more
fantasy.
If you saw what he looked like, you'd laugh at what he writes here. He's a
phoney. Only someone as scatter brained as Katy would buy into his
nonsense.
Fake, fake, fake.

Don't let me stop you from making a greater fool of yourself than everyone
already knows you to be. Knock yourself out.
