Negotiating Price on Used Sailboat
 

I am trying to negotiate a price for a used sailboat. Is it
appropriate to offer 10% below what they are asking? First time for
this - don't want to offend the seller, but also want to make the best
deal for myself. Any advice would be appreciated.

Ya gotta low-ball the *******s! Offer half what they're asking. Don't
worry about insulting them. Make sure you have cash money in hand. No
payments or any of that other crap. Greenbacks! If the dude balks then
ask him what his lowest counter offer is. In other words haggle. Act
like you love the boat but just can't afford much more than you're
offering. Act like you're gonna cry if you don't get it cheap. Use your

I'd offer him 50% of what he's asking.
You can always go up on your offer, but it's hard to go down.

No one should get offended in negotiations.

Offend the seller? How could you possibly do that?

The first thing, of course, is to figure out what its worth, then
offer 10% (or more) below that. Just because the fates have brought
you together, you are under no obligation to overpay for a boat.

The last used boat I bought (a very nice one, in fact) I paid about
2/3's of what it was originally offered at.

With houses, its usually fairly easy to find comparables that set a
market values, but with boats, especially those in limited production,
its a lot harder, and there's nothing to stop someone from asking 30%
or more above the fair value.

And, absolutely get a proper marine survey, and make sure that the
sale agreement allows you to get out if the survey finds any serious
problem.

I think about 60% of the asking price is a good
place to start.

Figure the final selling price will be at or below 75%
of the asking price.

You should know what comperable boats have been selling for. Make an
offer taking into consideration what condition the boat is in that you
are looking at plus what equipment is included. If the seller is
priced above market let him know. Also let him know that his is not
the only boat you are looking at.
