Click on the newspaper for a larger picture. It looks like they're
doing donuts in an MIT Club FJ.

Snazzy paint job. Looks more like a 420 to me (not tubby enough to be
an FJ) but it could be. Not a great photo, looks like the jib backed
and if they just tacked, then they turned at least 70 degrees too far
(or maybe tacked from a reach). It almost looks like the jibs aback.

The wake does indeed make it look like they're doing donuts.

-signed- Injun Ear (formerly known as Eagle Eye)

PS yes I did at one time ....long ago.... own and race FJ 2102. So
that is a clue to my identity for the curious.

Looks like they're practicing penalty turns. Which look a lot like
doughnoughts.

Or maybe they actually are doing doughnoughts? Yesterday was Paczki
day, although I'm not aware that anybody celebrates that in Boston.

As for the identity of the boat, the stripes at the head of the mainsail
would indicate FJ. But it may be a 420 - it's hard to tell from the
picture.

I doubt they're practicing at all, the river is normally frozen but
there was a thaw yesterday. They probably just launched to claim
"first sail of the year" and there's not enough room to actually do
much sailing.

Fat Tuesday?

To complicate this more, MIT has 18 FJ's and 6 420's, all by Vanguard.
And it may be that the sails are interchangeable, though I don't see
why they do do that do. I'm pretty sure its an FJ, because the 420
chine is a bit softer, especially forward.

Yeah, that sounds plausible.

Yeah, Fat Tuesday. The Poles in the Detroit area celebrate it by eating
ginormous disgusting jelly doughnoughts called Paczki (pronounced
Punch-ski).

So, a 75% chance of it being an FJ? It's certainly not a Tech Dinghy, a
Rhodes 19, a Hobie 20 or a Laser.
