Its about 18" wide. It can really only handle two people comfortably at 18' but can hold 3 or 4 at 27 because of the weight distribution. It won't have a motor on it but could be paddled pretty easily. I really want to finish it so I can take it out ont he water and start sailing more than I am. I like the sail. It looks like a lateen rig from the middle east. I think Polynesians sailed all the way to the Easter Islands and to South America in canoes like Ulua but bigger versions. I read a book several years ago, can't think of the name, but it was about waiting for the west wind. And these South Seas sailors would take off in front of typhoons which was the only time a west wind came and they would sail out in front of it for thousands of miles with pigs and chickens and nuts and other food on board till they found an island they could colonize. As far as I know. know that a lot of boats that say they are cold molded don't always use strips. They can use larger sections of wood like plywood sheets. It covers a larger area much faster but doesn't always look as good if you are going to keep it unpainted. I like the natural wood look and this project is small enough to do thin strips. I think it will be a good boat to practice sailing and go up and down the CA coast in. I would really like to one day build my own yacht but that is a longways away.
