Need O'Day 31 Line Diameters & Owner's Manual
I just bought a 1986 O'Day 31. I received a lot of paperwork with the
boat, but no owner's manual. Is there an owner's manual for this boat? If anyone has one, I would like to get a copy. I have to replace all the running rigging on the boat. The rigging is very worn, but it appears that the size of the lines are as follows: Reefing lines: 3/8" Jib Halyard: 3/8" Main Sheet: 1/2" Main Halyard: 3/8" Can anyone confirm that these are the right line sizes? Thanks for any assistance. |

Thanks for any assistance A Google search might turn up an owners group with a online manual. As far as replacing running rigging goes those sizes sound fine although upgrading to a slightly higher tech line would allow you to drop down a size in halyards particularly the jib halyard. Mainsheet would not have to be high tech and you could still drop down to 3/8" I use 3/8" StaSet on my boat and it has a bigger main than yours. Buy solid black for the mainsheet. |

Buy solid black for the mainsheet. Why? Scott, I like solid black for the mainsheet because it's always being handled and it lays on the cabin sole and gets stepped on. After all that it still looks good. Anything else looks crappy after a season. I also use black for the outhaul and Harken jib cars. That jib car line is always getting stepped on too. Everything else is color coded. |

I thought I had replied, being a former owner of 2 O'Day's...but maybe I didn't...mine were originals, not Person built or Lear built, which I believe, is what your is. With the European style cabin? We were very happy with the perfotmance of our 27. Have no idea who you would wirte regarding manuals etc, but there is an O'Day discussion group somewhere. Is SailNet still in existence? THat's where it used to be. |

This is my first boat. I do not have much to offer in the line of advice to people who have been sailing for any period of time. I was just looking for a little help. You are a jerk. Is this guy for real? I leave a post to help you out and you write the above. Bottom line here is your nothing but a ****ing ****** and your choice of boats proves it. O'Days are cheaply made, undercanvased pieces of ****. We have one in our race club and they can't even get back in time on Wednesday nights before the cookout food gets cold. Oh, and it's bigger than yours. O'Days are owned by ******s like you who can't even figure out what size line to buy for halyards. There's only a ton of information out there on choosing line. I guess your too stupid to find it or your too lazy. You should have bought a Sunfish to get started. I'll bet you can't even dock that floating houseboat. Your probably a menace at your marina. Now get lost you stupid **** before you get your ass kicked all over this newsgroup. |

Oh, and by the way. A simple Google search turned up 2 O'Day websites both offering owner's manuals. Now if you can't find that sitting at your desk how are you going to find your way past the first channel marker? Once again...........get lost. |

Apparently my news server has missed many of the posts in reply to my
original question. Although I now am able to read posts from Dec 7 and Dec 8, my server still does not show any posts to this thread prior to that (except Ringmaster's criticism on Dec 5!). I want to thank those of you who responded, even though I have not seen your posts. As a matter of fact, I did find a source for the owner's manual (D&R Marine Supply in Masachusetts). One of the owners is a former employee of O'Day and is very knowledgable about O'Day construction. On the whole, my experience as a new sailor is that almost everyone has been very cordial and helpful. Ringmaster, I do appreciate the fact that you responded to my original question. Had I seen your response I would have thanked you. You assume that I am some newbie who knows nothing about boating or technology (newsgroups). Well, I may be a new sailor, but I an certainly not a tech newbie. I provide critical computer programming and support for a fortune 500 company. I have monitored this newsgroup for some time now, and I have seen a lot of helpful, informative and amusing discussion taking place. The one striking thing that I noticed, though, is the insults and name-calling that take place here. When I saw Ringmasters insult, I was not going to accept it without comment. Normally I just ignore name-callers and trolls, but this time I had enough. Sorry if I took the newsgroup in the wrong direction, but foul insults from people like Ringmaster do not belong in a newsgroup like this. |

For most newcomers, we remain civil. Even helpful. But you want polite, try rec.boats.cruising. If fact, you'll find half of us are there also.
