New SAILS Update!

Well, as I said...we have an awesome hi tech main ready to go on the
boat! It's lying here in the hall, rolled and waiting. You could not
EVER look at this and think it was used. Amazing deal!

BUT, I spoke to a few sailors who race and they were worried about the
Pentax Mylar being cut down from 135% (actually 133.3333%) all the way
down to 115%. There was some concern that the movement of the center of
effort would stress the tri-radial sail wrong, outside of it's design
goal and shorten it's life. Okay....Not more than 20 minutes after that
conversation my phone rings and it's the loft. He says he can't cut the
sail down to 115% for exactly that reason. It will be more in the
120-125% range. Coolness!

With your light wind conditions why do you want to cut it down anyway?

We've found the main on the 35s5 even more powerful than anticipated.
We had been told that the 35s5 sailed well under main alone, but I
really felt this was for heavier air. In practice, even with 10-12
knots she does great under her main. Pop the 110% and she flies. Come
too close to 18 and it's the 1st reef.
Now, with all that in mind I expect we'll find the boat quite fast and
fun with these hi tech sails. 125% will be plenty. Remember....we're
not racing and just bopping around out there with a Thomas, who won't
be 3 until next September.
