Well, I paid my money and I took my chances....ordered a main and genoa

Yes, they are less gay than Ganzy. And yes, they will allow VMG's of 6.3 knots at 37%. Pics coming soon! RB 35s5 NY |

Go ahead; I've got a good grip on my chair. Firer Away with another dumb rebuttal. I'm ready:^) The 35s5 sails were said to be in great shape....but here's what I found during the full survey. The mylar main was badly stained with mildew. An effort was made to wash it...a no-no, and it suffered even more. The owner said I'd get a season out of it and he was right. The 110% was in the same kind of shape, more ugly than worn, but now has some delamination. The 155 is in good shape, but FAR too much sail for the boat. I'll probably sell it off at some point. The chute is practically new. The heavier storm sail is unused. So in short it was a mixed bag. I paid less for the boat after the sails were surveyed. I've bought very nice sails to replace these and I'm excited to get them up! I've e-mailed you the deal I got.... RB 35s5 NY |

We sail just fine with a 110% (and a rather tired sail at that) in everything over 6-8 knots of wind. Most mastheads around here have a RF 135-145% type sail and it's quite common to see them out reefed down or with no main up. Oh, and according to Mark at Doyle, he flew a 110 on his Beneteau 36.7 most of the time. You guys simply don't know crap and this thread is really proving it!!! RB 35s5 NY |

This summer, I'd say I got about equal use of the 155 and the 100, and used the 135 only a couple of times. So you either had pretty light days or some good air. Not much in the middle? I think most of the days we sailed we had between 8 and 16 knots. Do you think a fractional rig boat with a SA of over 600 sq. feet and disp. of under 12000 lbs needs a 155% often? I just want YOUR opinion because no one else I know with lighter boats and fractional rigs needs them much. In fact, the J29 here Excite flys a small headsail almost all of the time and he has a custom ballast boat. The go-to sail on a J30 here (and we know three) is a 110%. Nutsy,
A Question; You have a Self Furler on your Head Stay, Why are you cutting a #1? Why aren't you just rolling it up? It sounds like your "2nd Hand head sail" isn't going to be able to take a partial reef? Is that the case? Will you be able to roll it to a 100% if you can't cut it? I guess I'm asking; If you furl it, will it lose its driving force and just be a Heeling Producer? I don't understand the mentality of cutting down a head sail on a Self Furler? Please explain? |
NEW Sails!!!
I guess I'm asking; If you furl it, will it lose its driving force and just be a Heeling Producer? All good questions, Thom. I feel that sails perform best when they are not furled, with a sharp leading edge and proper shape. 125% combined with our big main is a lot of sail area and as I've said, we found the 110% more than enough most of the time. The sail will also last longer with loads distributed across the whole grid, rather than a section of it when the sail is partially rolled up. Now add to that the fact that these hi tech sails will power up the boat even more and I happy to be a bit conservative by cutting the genoa a bit. Sure it will furl, pretty well I bet. Remember that the 35s5 is all about her mainsail. I sailed all the way to oyster bay on a close reach with only the main, and well to weather at times. No jib required with 15 knots+ blowing. Also keep this in perspective: I don't race and I do a lot of easy daysailing and overnighters. I won't demand a lot from these sails 95% of the time, certainly not what they were built for. On the other hand they will be fun when I do push the boat and are a great deal for the money. It's a win/win all around. RB 35s5 NY |

Starting with the purchase of a racing jib for a cruising knock about boat, Thom, I paid nothing for the Pentax Mylar. I thought I e-mailed you and gave you the facts. I traded a sail from my closet, a 1989 Kevlar Lt. #1 from a J35. To be fare, it's in like new shape and worth more than what I'm getting, but I couldn't use it or recut it and I got less that 400 bucks for the last one I sold. The pentax mylar has only been cut down 8% and a new cover added. I've been promised that it's 8-9 condition or my money back. Same for the main and that sail, already delivered, is hard to rate much below a 10 for condition. The Genoa was cut high to make it easier for a small crew to handle and for singlehanding. The deck sweeper is a pain and I don't race. On top of that the loft threw in new battens for the main and is including a lazy jack system for free. I can't see the downside of a basically free hi tech sail, cut for easier handling that I will use for bopping around the bay. True, we're not taking advantage of the below deck furler, but so what? I'm not taking advantage of all the 35s5's potential or any boat for that matter. Who does? Perhaps you can enlighten me? RB 35s5 NY |
NEW Sails!!!
Nutsy,
Years ago, when I lived in NY and Herb Hild was still alive and sailing his Tartan, he had a saying that has stuck with me. He said: " Anything that keep me, my family and my friends off the pointy end of the Boat is a GOOD THING!" Nutsy, you have turned that completely around by going to a Hanked on head sail! You've made Neal happy and me disgusted. You've gone against a cruiser's way. Sorry, I disagree with you (For what ever that means coming from a Beached Bum) http://community.webtv.net/tassail/ILLDRINKTOTHAT |

Nutsy, you have turned that completely around by going to a Hanked on head sail! Thom, I think you're confused. The Pentax Mylar has a UV cover and was built to be furled and left up. Perhaps if I was going away for a week or more, I'd roll and stow, but otherwise it's no different than my current Mylar 110% except that it's in great shape and will be easier to fly. RB 35s5 NY |
NEW Sails!!!
Sorry Nutsy,
I asked about Ultra Lite protection and didn't get an answer or at least I don't remember an affirmative answer. Is you have it set-up for Self Furling and storage on the Head Stay; GOOD ON YOU!! I stand corrected. Carry on. http://community.webtv.net/tassail/ILLDRINKTOTHAT |

You are more gay than Liberace! :-) No, because if they did I would offer them a big wet smootchie and a good spanking with a big rubber paddle. Ummm, promises, promises! They run when they hear that. I can't be trolled about my boat because I don't have one. No one will ridicule my 350lb wife who has incurable acne on her back and hairy nipples (five of them!). You have Ozzy beat, his wife only has 3 nipples! This place is like a pool of sharks. Sharks in a barrel... LP |
