Yes, they're all tax free, but it seems like there should be some limits
and stiffer requirements. Some of the charities only really give a small
percentage of what they bring in to the people they claim they're helping.

Yup. The United Way has distributed less than 10% of its collected funds in
some past years. They're doing somewhat better now, but they've had to cook
the books to make the program look more efficient.

My take: if a charity can't legitimately show that it distributes 70% of
its revenues, it should not be tax exempt.

There's a reason I said it depends very much on what you call art. There's
no doubt the entertainment industry is a significant economic engine. Most
of its output, however, I wouldn't dignify with the word "art."

Thank you.

Oh come on. You're going to claim that because I used the phrase 1/2 of
Manhattan, you're going to take that so literally that 2000+ properties is
insignificant?? You're just being obviously obtuse to what? provoke an
argument? Why don't you for once respond in the spirit of the discussion.

Hate to burst your little bubble, Jon, but there are more than 4,000
buildings in Manhattan. (4,000 is of course the magic number required to
make your statement true.)

Do you deny that they own huge chunks of the city? They're one of the

One of the many, many articles that give you a number for their vast
holdings...

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag...C0A9669582 60

"Besides the Roman Catholic Church, which owns 2,000 buildings in New York
City..."

But, of course, you don't believe the NY Times, right?

You weren't even in the right ballpark.
