In the northern hemisphere there's too many continents in the way to sail around the world. If you try to sail north of them you run into solid ice. You can sail around the world in the southern hemisphere because there's enough room. You sail between Antarctica and the Horn and Good Hope and Luellen. Down there the prevailing winds blow from west to east. So the direction to sail easiest is west to east. That answers the *why*. My namesake is an expert at this! Cheers, Ellen |
