Who here has been in the middle of an ocean?

Even Better who here has crossed an Ocean?

For 2 ASA points.

Why would anyone want to be out in the middle of an ocean?

Bonus question

For those old timers here they might remember me asking this question
as the first question I ever posted here, and BTW I never got a
straight answer. I ask you this. If you were to sail around the world
would you go east or west? Why?

BTW Ol Thom, when I asked that question, you said that a friend of
yours had just died , and he asked that very same question...who was
that?

I can answer that one for ya. In the northern hemisphere there's too many continents in the way
to sail around the world. If you try to sail north of them you run into solid ice. You can sail around
the world in the southern hemisphere because there's enough room. You sail between Antarctica and
the Horn and Good Hope and Luellen. Down there the prevailing winds blow from west to east. So the
direction to sail easiest is west to east. That answers the *why*. My namesake is an expert at this!

'cuz it's cool?
Cleanest & healthiest air on the planet?
Study pelagic species?
Widest & least light-polluted sky?

Umm, you can't go straight & still sail around the world.
You have to make some turns. Maybe that's why you didn't get
a straight answer?

Personally I have no interest in "sailing around the world"
as some kind of bragging-rights stunt. It is easiest &
fastest to go west-to-east because of prevailing winds &
currents.

I thought in the middle of the rain forest has the best air on earth.
Would you stury the Mesopelagic, bathypelagic, Abyssopelagic or the
Hatydel Zone?

I think the haydel would be the most fun and interesting, maybe hook a
cracken.

Bragging stunt, or true measurement and accomplishment?

For 2 ASA points.

Why would anyone want to be out in the middle of an ocean?

Because they pay me well to do it.....

West.

Why?

Because there's bugger-all east of me except a lot of windy cold water.

But your question is too simplistic. I could go east, then north. I
could go north, then west. Or I could just go east, which would be the
shortest & fastest way. Depends on what you're trying to achieve. If it
was just bragging rights, I'd go east. If I had heaps of time, I'd go
north then west through Torres Strait.

discussions & arguments while we've been at sea.

Croseed a sea, but not an ocean. Only out to about 200 NM on the
PAcific.

For 2 ASA points.

Why would anyone want to be out in the middle of an ocean?

So you don't hit land?

I'd sail west, because there's land east.

Joe,

His name was Ed ( for the life of me, I can't remember his Last name) He
was heading for England to pick up his new boat. He was asking which way
was the best way to Travel back to Australia.

I suggested going East on the "Roaring Forties" He agreed but said it
was probably more than he could handle on his own.

We; I, didn't know just how sick he was. He died in England. It was, is,
an unfinished Story!!

Oz, help me! I can't remember ED's last name. I'm in the middle of a
"Senior Moment"
