Hey, BS, you really ought to get out a bit more from your dockside nautical
ghetto. There really are clubs where people actually sail instead of sitting
around talking about it over a beer.

Pet peeve here! I dropped my Yacht Club membership when, upon the
election of a new set of officers, they decided to require that a
certain amount of money must be spent in the bar and dining room each
month or you were assessed a fairly high minimum charge. Surely, I
said, you cannot mean non-resident members who live 300 miles away
such as myself and who pay their annual dues without putting any
pressure on the club facilities and who could not meet the minimum
even if desired to do so? You must see that with my dues you are
getting money for nothing. Oh yes was the reply, you are included in
the minimum. It seems that the club had gotten themselves into
trouble when these same clowns demanded expansion of the food service,
hiring a high priced chef and kitchen manager and couldn't cover.

So I saved myself some money without impacting the amount of sailing
was doing.

Still waiting, BTW, to hear about your "club's" junior sailing program.

This club did have a good Junior sailing program, producing at least
one olympic sailor. My sons all took advantage of it.

Still waiting to hear about your club's wireless internet, deals with
local restaurants, West Marine, Sail Lofts....oh and can your club
handle both slips and moorings? Do they have dockside power and water
for everyone? Is it full service? Of course not!
Dude...all the bar length in the world won't make your "club" nicer
than what we have. You pay to sit on the end of a chain. It's the pits.
Didn't your boat already have an anchor?
As every sailor learns when they join us from "sailing clubs" like CIYC
and HYC, you get about a 3rd more use out of a boat when it in a slip.
As I said, we have arrangements with another club for a junior sailing.
And they get service from us. It's called a boating community, Dave.
NMYC and SMYC are the best on the Island and nicer than what you have.
Bottom line: Moorings suck. They're for small toy boats and folks who
can't afford a slip.

I generally hear that excuse from the obese section. Too fat to waddle into
a tender or to frail to climb aboard.

It's an accepted fact that a boat at a mooring takes far less wear and is
always presenting the least area to the wind. It is far easier to sail off &
to a mooring.

A dock is what you tie up to load supplies and complete repairs.

Large sail vessels always take moorings or set anchor.

The privacy of sitting to your mooring and enjoying the scenery is
priceless.

Generally up here.... powerboats take slips and sailboats go to a mooring.

Powerboaters and sailors with impairments can be excused for their envious
comments regarding a mooring.

Not true. For example, in high current areas, it's not unusal for the boat
to be pointing into the current abeam to the wind.

Always? Gee, not from what I've seen. Much depends on the length of stay and
reason for being around.

It's about 50/50 here. On average, the nicer boat who are local, are in a
slip. Those on a mooring are either local riff raff or not here long-term.

comments regarding a mooring.

What an ignorant assertion. Having been in slips for years, and then on a
mooring for 4 and now ba Of course, if your priority is the cable and phone
hookup, and pressure water at the dock rather than making sure your tank is
topped....or you want to run your AC nonstop....ck to a slip, I'll take the
four years on a mooring anyday....being in a slip is annoying, especially on
weekends when people hang off your bow, intrude into your life, and
generally provide a noise level not found out on the water. And in storms,
your boat gets rolled around on its' cleats rather than riding the weather
as it should...bow to.....ok, so it takes time and effort to row out and
stow your stuff, etc. but it's well worth it to feel your boat actually
moving underneath you instead of yanking against itself every time someone
exceeds the No Wake when tied in a slip.....if your priorities are other
than wanting to be a part of it all...that your boat is just one more hotel
room....go for the slip....
