Affordable Classes
Hi All,
I live in Portland Oregon and I'm new to the sailing sport. I was wondering if anyone would know of free or affordable sailing classes in my area. I remember that in B.C. Canada, the YMCA had a very good program called S.A.L.T. which was around $350.00 for a week, on a sailboat, and you learned a lot about sailing. Is there anything like that in this neck of the woods? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you, Praxi |

I'd recommend going to one of the sailing clubs (there are several in Portland) and offering to crew for some people. If you don't act like a jerk & pay attention, you can learn a heck of a lot. If you want a more structured environment, I recommend the Coast Guard Auxiliary of Power Squadron night classes on boating, navigating, etc etc. You could easily do both. It's not quite as intense an experience, but you'll learn far more and spend less. For that matter, making friends at the sailing club(s) will lead you to knowledge & skill of working on boats, which is necessary but far less glamorous, and not taught in classroom. Leads directly into the next subject.... see next thread "Buying First Boat." Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
