Heart of Gold and the Genset
Looks like we'll be getting a genset afterall. A Cruiser 32, which was
storm damaged has been bought by my yard after settling with the insurance. Tiny little Kholer (Sp?) 4K genset will be a gift from the yard along with an installation. She's all prewired for it and the platform is ready and waiting. I have mixed feelings about it. It weighs more than a box of feathers and we have yet to establish that it's something we really need at anchor. In the slip, hanging out or working, the a/c is a no brainer luxury. Still, I had to say yes or no and I imagine this can only bring up the value of the boat with no cost to me. According to the guy who's putting it in along with a hush box, we'll barely hear it and no one anchored nearby will. I think he's right since I can barely hear the genset of the Cruiser 34 that's not far from us. It's amazingly small and quiet. So...good news for our Heart of Gold! RB 35s5 NY |

Couple questions...is it gaseous or diesel? Must be water cooled right? Hush box excludes air cooled Were is it going to exhaust? Going to need another strainer and thru hull. 4kw should run a 18000 BTU just keep Suzy's hairdryer ashore. You going to wait till fall to install? Joe |

I was pretty excited at the offer. I'm guessing it's gas since the Cruiser 34 has one and it's gas. They'll have to set up a thru-hull and so on, which is why we'll wait for the season to wrap up. Our AC is 17000 BTU's total. The 4KW will be able to start it so long as not much else is on. Should run it without a hitch. The platform is aft in the large starboard storage area...not a great place for that weight. RB 35s5 NY |

Fueling a hot genset is very dangerious, and you will need spark free blowers, and flame screens on your tank vents. Plus I'd put a blower in the locker the genset is mounted, gas gensets.. really most gen sets are prone to spring a leak once and a while due to vibration. Just a drip in a confined locker could become a major explosion hazard with gasoline. They'll have to set up a thru-hull and so on, which is why we'll wait for the season to wrap up. Good Luck Nutsy,
I didn't have a AC but had a Microwave. I had a 500W Genset to charge Batteries for Inverter. Not much bigger than a Lunch box. Noisy as hell but portable. Used battery clip to use and disconnect and stored in the Head when not in use, which was most of the time. My diesel Aux was a better choice. Quitter and less fuel and all hooked up to boat circuitry. It didn't go with the sale. I've hooked it up to my furnace circuit in the house. I can have heat and a couple of lights during Power Failures. Bet your thankful for AC this Summer back there. I've used my House AC more this year than all the other years combined. Nice today. 64 degrees and force 2 breeze and sunny. http://community.webtv.net/tassail/ThomPage |

Bet your thankful for AC this Summer back there. I've used my House AC more this year than all the other years combined. You win that bet. The heat index for most of this week was 100-105 degrees. At least I was able to spend some time aboard and let a friend sleep aboard when her power went out in Astoria. On more "normally" hot days the A/C is nice when we're done with a sail. Packing up the main and cleaning up usually takes a while, so it's nice to finish up below in a cool cabin with an ice cold drink. Those windless days mean the boat is more usable for BBQ as well. I have to laugh when I think of poor Dave or Scotty Vermon hanging on a hook with no A/C days like yesterday. They sure are "roughing it!" RB 35s5 NY |

Nutsy,
I think you may have run that "HOOK" into your thumb. With a couple of 6volt Fans and open hatches a boat on the water can be kept very comfortable and a lot more economical than a AC. Out here, in the Pacific NW the water temp never get above 50 degrees. Very nice if you can circulate it. Even LISound, as I remember doesn't get into the 80's very often. BUT A AC is very nice but a space hug. If you have one you're just about obligated to use it. http://community.webtv.net/tassail/ThomPage |

Joe,
You sure did ask a lot of the right questions? One of the reason I went with the small portable with long battery charging leads. Also one of the reason it wasn't used that much. An extra battery bank and a 100 Amp Generator/inverter makes sense. Not cheap tho? http://community.webtv.net/tassail/ThomPage |

So now you have to carry gasoline aboard and find somewhere to stow the can.

You a seperate gasoline tank buildt in? Or is that siomething you will ad when you install the gen-set? None of this matters, Joe. I just came back from my yard. It's a Onan E series diesel genset. I really feel it's too big and heavy, so I'm looking at possibly selling it off on ebay to pay for something more suited for my boat. It weighs over 350 lbs and that's without the power vented cover and fuel assembly. I wonder what the smallest genset is that could start and run my A/C...? RB 35s5 NY |

No genset is suited for your boat (sorry) but that's just one of the reasons it's a day sailor and not a cruising vessel. You can get a shaft PTO driven genset that will work, but you will have to run your main all the time. Onan is pretty compact and any diesel genset worth a damn is going to be 300+ pounds. Your main problem is space no weight so much, you can not go air cooled so you have to use a marine unit. Do you know of any other 35s5 with a genset? What do they use? It weighs over 350 lbs and that's without the power vented cover and fuel assembly. Thats nothing! My 7.5kw Lister is around 700lbs I wonder what the smallest genset is that could start and run my A/C...? I would get hatch top AC's and only use them at the dock. Toss them in the dock box while sailing. Your boat is a day sailor bob, the AC's and comforts of home are still quite a few steps away on your stepping stone path of boat ownership. During the hot weather sail at night. You might learn to enjoy it. Perhaps some hatch wind scoups would help..It's not that hot in NYC. To bad you can not use an air cooled unit, nice Duetz set on e-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/diesel-generator...QQcmdZViewItem. Joe RB 35s5 NY |
Heart of Gold and the Genset
No genset is suited for your boat (sorry) but that's just one of the reasons it's a day sailor and not a cruising vessel. Nonsense. It fits easily. I'd like to see if there's anything smaller and lighter before accepting the weight of two adults in gear that will be used on rare occasions. Your main problem is space not weight so much, you can not go air cooled so you have to use a marine unit. Do you know of any other 35s5 with a genset? What do they use? Space is certainly not the problem. The 35s5 starboard storage under the cockpit is most of the same space used on three cabin models. It's huge to the point of being almost rediculous. Right now we have three sail bags in there, the dinghy (not inflated!), 5 fenders. two tool kits and a lot of odds and ends that need to be cleaned out. There's still room for two people to sit and have tea. I have seen other 35s5's with gensets, but never asked what they were using. I'll look into it. I would get hatch top AC's and only use them at the dock. Toss them in the dock box while sailing. Our 35s5 already had a nice AC system with heat. Why buy cumbersome portables? Your boat is a day sailor bob, Yup, we bought her for day sailing and short trips. Right boat for the right usage. the AC's and comforts of home are still quite a few steps away on your stepping stone path of boat ownership. That's actually a valid point and I think I'd have to be a pretty old man to want a boat like Redcloud. Not knocking your boat....just not right for the fast and fun sailing we're doing now with a 23 month old toddler aboard. During the hot weather sail at night. You might learn to enjoy it. Perhaps some hatch wind scoups would help..It's not that hot in NYC. Last week the heat index was over 100 almost every day. We did find a nice night in there, but we were one of the only boats out until the sun dropped. We're sailing today...looks great out there! RB 35s5 NY |
