WASHINGTON Jun 23, 2006 (AP)- A Republican gubernatorial candidate's call for creation of a forced labor camp for illegal immigrants drew rebukes Friday from two GOP lawmakers, who labeled it a low point in the immigration debate. Don Goldwater, nephew of the late Sen. Barry Goldwater, caused an international stir this week when EFE, a Mexican news service, quoted him as saying he wanted to hold undocumented immigrants in camps to use them "as labor in the construction of a wall and to clean the areas of the Arizona desert that they're polluting." The article described Goldwater's plan as a "concentration camp" for migrants. Goldwater, a candidate for governor in Arizona, said in a statement Friday that his comments were taken out of context. He said he was calling for a work program for convicted nonviolent felons, similar to "tried and tested, effective and accepted practices" used by state and local jails. But two Republicans, Arizona Sen. John McCain and Rep. Jim Kolbe, called Goldwater's comments "deeply offensive" and asked state Republicans to reject his candidacy in the Sept. 12 primary. "That Mr. Goldwater is either unaware of or indifferent to the loaded symbolism, injustice and un-Americanism of his 'plan' to address the many serious issues caused by illegal immigration reveals his flaws as a candidate and a stunning lack of respect for the basic values of a generous and decent society," McCain said in a statement. Kolbe said that if the comments are true, Goldwater "has demonstrated his complete unworthiness for public office, and I am confident he will be soundly rejected by Republicans from the party of Barry Goldwater, who consistently demonstrated his compassion and respect for all people. This is a sad day in the national debate on immigration policy." McCain and Kolbe favor a guest-worker program for illegal immigrants. Goldwater made a similar comment at an April anti-immigration rally. "Build us that wall now!" Goldwater said, referring to a proposal to add 700 miles of fences along the U.S.-Mexico border. He promised then that if elected, he would put illegal immigrants in a tent city on the border and use their labor to build the wall. AMEN!!!! |

The federal government pays about $2.2 billion in medical treatment for uninsured immigrants, according to the report. It pays $1.9 billion in food assistance programs, such as food stamps and school lunches, for low-income families. And it pays $1.4 billion in aid to schools that educate illegal immigrant children. What's the matter Joe, short term memory problems? I repeated your quote exactly once already. Here is is again: "More than 66% of all births in California are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal whose births were paid for by taxpayers;" Now this claim is quite different from your new explanation the 66% of Medi-cal births are to illegals. If you're actually claiming these two statements are the same, then you've wasted the education we lavished on you. Perhaps you should leave and make some room for someone who would appreciate all we have to offer. If you go looking for the facts behind this issue, you'll find that even anti-illegal immigrant groups only claim that 36% of Medi-cal births are to illegal mothers - this is quite different from even your backpedal. This by itself is quite startling, but you had to turn into something so outlandish that only an idiot would believe it. .... You may be OK with unlawful immigration, I'm not. No, I'm against stupid claims and idiots who propagate them. If you're going to make factual claims, its best if they are true. If you know the truth then set us free! Why not? Maybe by doing nothing here we are encouraging and supporting more corruption south of the border. If we put a stop to illegal immigration perhaps the leaders south of the border would do more to provide it's own citizens with profitable work. Seems Mexicos leaders are to busy printing maps and guides to sneek the problem across the border for the gringos to deal with. Very cost effective. Exactly, if we enforced current laws, there would not be a problem. If I dropped a dime to INS it would be easy to get every contractor doing bottom jobs shut down here. Well except they have way bigger fish to deal with and could care less. Extremism is no vice!
I wonder if Joe can play the banjo?
Joe wrote: Yes...but that song is offensive...almost racist Doug. No, it isn't. Read the words to the song, it does not say one word against teen-agers, immgrants, welfare mothers, or drug addicts. OTOH it is making fun of bigots, so perhaps it is "racist" in that sense. If the Feds went to a dozen randomly selected large corporations, checked for the presence of illegal immigrants, and arrested the CEO and Board, the problem would go away. Exactly, if we enforced current laws, there would not be a problem. If I dropped a dime to INS it would be easy to get every contractor doing bottom jobs shut down here. Well except they have way bigger fish to deal with and could care less. Maybe we should think about ****canning the director of the INS and keep firing them until we can find one who will enforce the laws we put them in charge of enforcing. You are right, we need a few Enron type trials of CEO's ect using illegal labor. The most likely outcome, in today's political world, would be a rapid re-writing of the laws on hiring illegal immigrants... written by the CEOs themselves... Meanwhile, I recommend learning a little Spanish. It'll expand your potential cruising grounds too. You planing on cruising Texas and California or NY Amigo?. Already have, actually. And will definitely go back. I would like to cruise lots of the Gulf... just not in hurricane season! Need real world tips on entering port in Mexico? The company man was *very* eager to get me aboard and get his ship fixed, so he took care of it. That approach won't work travelling on private means, though. DSK |
