A scope sighted rifle and a couple hundred metres separation beats a handgun nearly every time. A couple hundred meters beats most rifle shooters, too. 600+ yards is a long range for any gun. Well, Jon needed to brush up on his reading skills, and you need to brush up on your arithmetic. Oh, jeeze, I do. I meant a 600+ feet. Max |

Not with a model 1894 Winchester, probably chambered for .44-40 black powder, which wouldn't still be in the air at 600 meters unless he aimed the gun 20 degrees above the horizon. Max |

He just squinted his jaw and pointed his eyes and squoze off a shot. T'cha... everyone knows that. Heck, his kid could pick off a bad-guy at 200 yards with a spit wad. Seahag |

Not a real long range for a scope sighted rifle, I think you'll agree. Most good sporting rifles shooting around 1-1.5 MOA would make head shots pretty simple at that distance. PDW |

It takes a pretty good sporting rifle to get 1 ~ 1.5 MOA, at least in my experience. But (given the right weapon) a 200 meter shot is not all that difficult... pistol silhouette begins at 150 and goes out to 400.... but that's with very specialized pistols! There are accounts of snipers with customized rifles hitting small targets (like bad guys' heads) at 2200 yards. Now for an even more extreme (and slightly more on-topic) example, the battleship USS Pennsylvania, firing 14"/50 naval rifles, blew a hole in a bunker from 15 miles away, then less than a minute later, put a second round thru the hole. WOW!! The good ol' boys at Dahlgren did some pretty impressive shooting using 16" rifles but nothing like that. |
