What is the proper location for the end of the whisker pole that attaches to
the mast?

Should the pole be level?

Does it matter?

I have a track that gives 5 ft of adjustment up and down on the front
of the main mast.

sure it matters bob....Otherwise we would not have a track on the
mast....Its kinda complicated but let me try..

A track is best but for just poling out a jib you can usually get by with a
fixed pad eye mounted on the front of the mast, at gooseneck level.

Yes it matters, but what is "proper" depends on the goal. Do
you have to conform to a set of class rules? Do you have an
adjustable whisker pole? Are you sailing along lazily or do
you have a skilled helmsman concentrating or even racing?
How strong is the wind and what are the wave conditions?

FWIW I agree with Alan G that a good location is opposite
the gooseneck (for strength).

If it's gusty or wavy, you want the butt of the pole up
higher to hold the clew down rigidly. If light air, you want
the butt down low to allow the leach to flow as much as
possible. If sailing lazily, you might set the butt down on
the deck and lash it to a lifeline stanchion to hold it. If
you're sailing in a one-design class then you have to do
what everybody else does.

Everything is always different, that's one of the fun things
about sailing.

Bob,

Doug has pretty much given you the right scoop.

In Racing your pole is limited to your "J" measurement and that usally
work to a level position on the Clew of your 150 Genny. It will have a
tendency to rise. I usally use the Lazy sheet as a Barber Haul to keep
it in a level position. If you have a full Spinnaker Set-up you have a
downhaul to keep it stable. If you are poling out assymetrical, it is
necessary to keep the tack Lower than the Clew, so if you use adjustable
Tack, you should let the Clew rise as you let the Tack rise.

I can't speak for her, but any woman that's respectable would care if the
pole has whiskers! Or else she would be like those female teachers who
rape, but are too pretty to put in jail.
