Right, which proves that the word "professional" has little meaning. A
low end Icom radio performs about as well as the high end model and
they can all take a dunking, or so they claim.

That fine rig - for a power boat! The only thing remotely suitable to sailing
is a spark gap rig.

Some of the first spark systems in England could go 6 miles.

The greatest range I ever heard of using lightning as the spark and a
passive receiver (no amplification whatsoever) was two times around the
earth. Tesla did this in the 1890's.
