Transfering a sailboat from trailer to stands

I would like to transfer a Pearson26 (draws 5400 lbs) from a trailer to
jack stands. I'm only getting temporary use of the trailer, so I will
have to get it on jack stands. Has anyone or anyone you know performed
this seemingly superhuman feat without the use of a helicopter or
crane?
Thanks.

No, but take pictures when you do it. Will your insurance cover you
if it falls?

Jack the trailer up. Secure the poppets under the boat
with chain to hold them together. Remove boat.

You may have to do it in stages. Consider the hassle
involved in doing this and in moving it later. It sounds
like many hours of sweat and work.

Fork lift is generally how it's done at most good yards. Some lesser
places have a craine with harness/straps.
Forks like this can pick up a 32 foot sailboat without any trouble and
I've seen a larger version that could pick up a 36 foot Catalina.
Travel lifts are usually employed at that point.

Make the stands the same height as the trailer so they barely fit under the
boat. Remove most of the air from the trailer tires, then drive away. When
you want to reverse the process, put the trailer back under the stands, then
fill the tires until you start to relieve the pressure on the stands.
Obviously, you want to be careful to get everything right before you try it.

A travel lift is a crane. He said he didn't want to use a crane. Idiot!

Thanks. We did something similar with one of our boats.

I'm sure a million other people have done this, but I thought it was neat.
We needed to get a boat on a trailer into the water, but the ramp and truck
were not a good match... water got very deep and I was concerned about
getting my picture in the paper with the Jeep floating behind me. :-) So, I
put the trailer as far down the ramp as I could without the wheels of it
getting wet, then blocked the wheels on the trailer, then disconnected the
hitch to the Jeep. I used a heavy line from the Jeep hitch to the trailer,
pulled forward to get the trailer off the wheel blocks, then backed it into
the water until the boat was floating.

Very creative solution, Jon.

Any way you do it, there will be clearance problems removing
the trailer.

Thanks for correcting me. I did mean trailer.

I assume you mean remove trailer, rather than remove boat.

Yes, I've done it with wood blocks and jacks.

Why? All you need is a couple of inches. We didn't have any problems.

I've done this twice with different boats and diff trailers. It calls
for some ingenuity but it isnt too hard. It is easy if the jacks can
go outboard of the trailer. Tie a rope to the toe rail (use a
carabiner) and tie the other end to a come-along and to a tree. Pull
the boat over a little sideways so you can get a jackstand under the
other side. Repeat on otehr side.
If the jacks must go inboard (within the footprint of the trailer),
then use stacks of cinderblocks and pieces of 2X6 stacked. You muist
stack them so you get weith off the trailer, then pull forward till the
axle almost hits a stack, restack on the other side of the axle.
Finally, replace your blocks with the jackstands.
Some boat movers have special trailers WITHOUT AXLES THAT GO ALL THE
WAY ACROSS just for this reason. Instead, the trailer has removable
sections in front and rear.

If it's going to be an annual thing, consider building a steel structure
strong enough to support the weight of the boat (we have a lot of welders in
the family and we made a similar structure for my father's 30 foot cruiser).
We used heavy duty straps and several come-alongs to lift the boat out of
the trailer and then drove the trailer out. We didn't leave it hanging on
the straps of course, and put jack stands in the appropriate places. The
steel structure doubled as a storage building, and some cheap plastic made a
nice weather proof cover.

I'll bet that looked real nice next to his double wide.

Technically, it was what made it a double wide.

It's a small boat, they should be able to crank the stands
up enough to move the trailer.
