Default Why sailors wear shoes

I like topsiders because they slip on easy. The razor thin
slit soles have good traction until they wear out.

Other shoes need socks, and sock just get wet and
uncomfortable while Topsiders mold themselves to your
feet.

I go through one pair a year, and if I sail a lot I wear them
out from the inside.

I hate the fact they give so little support. ON smaller boat
that give a bit as you step around they are not bad, but
on concrete, they are brutal on your knees.

I've owned 3 pairs of them, each a different brand, and hated every singke
one of them. They slide on a wet drck where regular canvas deck shoes
don't. I like the deck shoes that look just like the Keds we wore when we
were kids, white with heavy soles and canvas tops. Lands End makes a very
good pair...and cheap at $24.

Bare feet are also good for feeling lines under your feet.

I hate stepping on lines with shoes on...they do the rolly thing. Worse
yet is the electric cord...I almost flipped myself off the boat on that
once. If you step on a line in your bare feet it just sort of accomodates
itslef into your flesh.

I don't always wear socks in my canvas shoes...heck, you can just
throw them in the wash with some bleach if they get woofy...I know
what you mean about the support thing with topsiders...those shoes
weren't made for walking, that's for sure...another eason why I go
with the canvas deck shoes..they have some support and because
they're lace up I don't break them over the sides (I tend to sit
pigeon-toed...penny loafers break over the sides, too...)

What do you mean by "break over the sides"?

I rock my feet to the outsides of my shoes when I sit and stand

Gotcha! I've been known to wear out the toes of
my Topsiders with the lobster claws I have for big toes!

Somehow, I don't want to picture that...
