Friday night as we were pulling in to New Bern an old
friend called to invite me out sailing on Saturday on his boat, a Columbia 8.7 which he has restored beautifully. Great wind all week, then Saturday morning there was only a light wind. So what, we were ghosting out the creek into the river when my cell phone rang. It was Katysails, they were out in Chanteuse just around the corner. The wind died. We coasted to stop, then the boat kind of spin at random. Good thing we weren't in a hurry. A faint breeze started and enabled us to gybe over towards Katy & Mr. Sails. We than started sailing along together, talking about various pleasant things. My friend also took some very good pictures of Chanteuse with his Nikon digital camera, which I am hoping to get copies of & forward to them. It becamse apparent that the Kirie Elite is slightly faster than the Columbia, at least in ghosting conditions... can't say I was surprised. They pulled ahead and then tacked away from Hampton Shoal, just as I was about to call & warn them. The breeze continued to build and we sailed for another couple of hours, taking some more pictures of other peoples boats too. It would have been nice to stay longer, but my wife was working on our own boat & I didn't want to leave her in the lurch for the whole day. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |

Bwahahahahahahah a little girl STOMPED your butt sailing today...;0)
Oh well sounds like you had a blast. I stayed in and worked in tuning the La Brisa. Got a nice headsail off a Snipe. Heading out early in the morning tomorrow. Suppose to be foggy and 10 kts! Joe |

If you race in any serious competition, you will meet girls & Frenchmen who are very good sailors. No matter how good you are, some days some of them will beat you. I've met a few sailors who claimed to have never lost a race. I've never met one who said that, who had won anything big. Oh well sounds like you had a blast. We had fun. ... Doesn't 10 knots of wind blow the fog away? Good luck with the Snipe jib. DSK |

Gotta give you all credit, many people freak out when sailing in water that's only 1 or 2' deeper than their keels. Were you all back in the barn by the time the wind built up to 15? By the time Jimmy & I got in, we had rolled up some of that big genoa. DSK No, we hit that going bacl...set the sails wing and wing and just pushed merrily down the river...doused them in front of Hwy 17...the swing bridge still makes me nervous...the guy starts closing it up when you're still in the bridge channel sometimes... |

I did! The water was a gunblue with a heavy silver quit like sky, Wind
was steady as a rock first hour out of the north at 10. Sailed to the new high rise condo site, by the park so Skipper could bark at the colored folks crabbing. Across the lake to the South the stern wake sounded like one of the water falls in a big hot tub, Kingfishers diving all arounds us. On the south sside we sailed by Pelican pilons, each had a white or Brown Pelican preening feathers from a long night of fishing, then it happened, the wind just about stopped, the water fall wake turned into a few slow whirlpools spinning off the transom. had to row off the south shore and caught just enough breeze to barely make it back to the slip. Once I doused and stowed the sails the wind started picking back up :0( The Snipe 125% head sail was great. Might head back out after work. Joe |

No... no grass fires around here. Along the ICW they burn off the brush
once a year. Had some kids from the apartment complex nect to the marina start a fire on a raft they had. They did it late at night next to a big field of dry cane here in the marina. I made them put it out and one called me an asshole and took out running. The next moring the wind was out of the north so I cut the raft loose to blow back to a marina on the other side of the lake. End of problem. Joe |

But you can't knock one down with a hammer. And when the wind gets up.....does real well. The stern design that eliminates quarter wash makes it very smooth indeed and comfortable in a following sea. Got any pics of the restoration. Like to see one that has been well restored? I miss mine. Frank \ can't say I was surprised. I think they'll thin out once the snakes come out of hibernation ;) Katysails dock isn't really "up river" I would say, it's right at the mouth of the Trent and the Neuse is about 1 1/2 miles wide there. The Trent has a fixed highway bridge not far upriver, which limits boats going that way (a shame, because it's an awesome hurricane hole), on the Neuse you're not 'up river' until you get to the first set of islands a couple miles above New Bern. At that point, the river has noticable current. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
