Much worse if you've actually been, you really know what you're missing. Sort of like the difference between being born blind or losing your sight later in life. Besides, you're on the big water and I'm stuck here on Lake Erie!! :) John Cairns Anf the daffodills are blooming here...: P.... If you hadn't been a lifelong resident of the frozen wasteland yourself, you wouldn't be pouring salt on our collective northern wounds, Katy. Have mercy, bitte. Max Nope...spent 53 years in the frozen North and just like a reformed smoker, I'm going to relish in my newfound freedom. You'll just have to suffer until you decide to get down here yourself. That's okay. Hurricane season is just around the corner. :-) Max Floating docks, nyah, nyah....and 40 miles inland....we asked about that and found out we're pretty much as safe as you can get where we're at...the guys from Tidewater told me some great stories about people who anchor in the anchorage in the Trent and how they made so much money pulling sailboats out of the swamp when they didn't hold....we're also behind all that bridge structure...I suppose the bridge could collapse on us...but I don't think so... |

Yeah, and I went through Camille, and judged every properties survivability on how it did in that storm. After all, it could never get worse than that, could it? Well, I'm not going to sit and stew about what could or could not happen. We'll do what we have to, and if something happens, like the Trent River Bridge crashing into us, so be it... |

The way the winds prevail, not far at all....a couple miles...you can set your sails and run out one way or run back in the other on a beam reach...there is a bottle neck that comes up right after you hit Doug's marina but after that the river opens up to the Sound...Doug would be able to give you the actual miles...if we were shallower draft, we'd have more room to sail but have to watch the depth gauge so we don't go aground.... |

Oops. I'm sorry, I was thinking of your new digs. Forgot

The Hames River is REALLY shallow, so you have to take the channel out to the Elizabeth and then out to the Bay....it's really not all that far but there are a lot of things to worry about along the way..like all the terminals and bases.... |

There's a LOT of big ship traffic right there. Interesting to watch but worrisome to get in the way of. I never realized the James was so shallow but you're right. http://www.nauticalcharts.gov/viewer...CoastTable.htm Look at #12245 thru 12253 Once you get west of the Hwy 684 bridge, there's relatively little area to sail. There's some cool places there, though. Hampton & Portsmouth both have city docks. DSK |
