"Capt. Rob" wrote in message Sorry, Mooron. Your memory failed you again. We were talking about MY SUV in conditions found yesterday. aHEM.....I Believe you stated plainly that "And if you knew anything about driving you might know that a plowed street can be worse than unplowed." You actually think that stopping distances are shorter on ice and packed snow from a plow?!!! Stopping distances are a function of mass, inertia and friction surface. Now that this is explained... let's delve further.... powder snow does not provide friction of any sort..... nor does it radically impede forward progress unless it exceeds your ground clearance. Windrowing of snow to the sides of the tire will impede directional stability.... this results in loss of control. It is not a condition imposed by friction. Again..... slow your vehicle to maintain an adequate friction circle to each tire and minimize momentum to existing conditions. No plowed road shows glare ice under snow. Even minimal compacted snow surface will provide traction. Traction is control. Hope that was easy enough to understand for you. CM- |

There was no back pedal in any statement I made Bobsprit. Loss of control is higher in an unplowed road than a plowed road.... it's a simple fact. Scotty's truck has a huge amount of traction due to a combination of area and number of friction circles provided by the tires. If you combine this with the weight of the tractor and load.... then add the multiple gear options... it has a much larger margin before loss of control becomes an issue. Now Bobsprit... when it comes to a frictionless surface like glare ice.... I don't care if your "Tribeca" has 30" wheels and 8 wheel drive.... or a 14" layer of powder overlying it.... you ain't goin' nowhere if you don't have friction=traction.
