Is your water frozen in your dock now?
Big bergs in the LIS? That's gotta be why your not sailing right? Your not scared of cold water are you? We are having crisp clear skies and brisk winter breezes here. Took the LaBrisa out for lunch today, 15kt SW slight chop crystal clear skies 69 degrees. Don't be mad I outed you as the Commode, or I drive up there and give ya a sandwich. You know where Time Square is? Joe |

What about using a bubbler system?
Long Island does not freeze that hard, especially the Sound. "Capt. Rob" wrote in message oups.com... But the whole harbor is frozen solid right? I don't sail in a harbor, Joe. The LIS has been known to freeze and last season the entire dock area was solid. Few folks risk it. You must have gotten the same geography lessons as Katy. Oh, and you're also a royal asshole! Bwahahahahahahaha! Poor Joe! RB 35s5 NY |

I used to walk around on parts of the Sound, especially in Rowayton, as a kid. The boy Jesus? A lot of marinas are on rivers that freeze as well. A bubbler will prevent damage at the dock, but has nothing to do with whether or not you can get down a channel, and out to the rest of the Sound. Use long bubbler lines. I have a crappy old Blue Jay on a trailer that I take out occasionally during warmer periods in the winter. I have no idea why you think that ice that isn't "that hard" would not be an impediment to sailing. Reread what I said. The LIS does not freeze that hard. In fact, the Coast Guard uses 65 foot icebreakers that are limited to 12 inches of ice. Remember these 65 footers go up canals where the big breakers can't. The frost line on Long Island is 18 inches! Now that's aenemic! Amen! |

We named our boat "Chanteuse" because, of course, she's French and needed a French name, but we also wanted to incorporate something personal, as we have with all our boats. After test sailing her, we noticed that she sings when she's zipping along, plus the connection with my then avocation of singing. Hence "Chanteuse": female singer. |

''Lisa Marie''. for obvious reasons. Scotty RedCloud is named after a strong American who never gave up fighting to be free. Much of Red Cloud's life was spent at war, first and most often against the neighboring Pawnee and Crow, at times against other Oglala. In 1841 he killed one of his uncle's primary rivals, an event which divided the Oglala for the next fifty years. He gained enormous prominence within the Lakota nation for his leadership in territorial wars against the Pawnees, Crows, Utes and Shoshones. Beginning in 1866, Red Cloud orchestrated the most successful war against the United States ever fought by an Indian nation. The army had begun to construct forts along the Bozeman Trail, which ran through the heart of Lakota territory in present-day Wyoming to the Montana gold fields from Colorado's South Platte River. As caravans of miners and settlers began to cross the Lakota's land, Red Cloud was haunted by the vision of Minnesota's expulsion of the Eastern Lakota in 1862 and 1863. So he launched a series of assaults on the forts, most notably the crushing defeat of Lieutenant Colonel William Fetterman's column of eighty men just outside Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming, in December of 1866. The garrisons were kept in a state of exhausting fear of further attacks through the rest of the winter. Red Cloud's strategies were so successful that by 1868 the United States government had agreed to the Fort Laramie Treaty. The treaty's remarkable provisions mandated that the United States abandon its forts along the Bozeman Trail and guarantee the Lakota their possession of what is now the Western half of South Dakota, including the Black Hills, along with much of Montana and Wyoming. That and she's red and rides like a cloud. Joe |

The last two boats: CYGNUS - constellation, Swan, we bought the boat with that name and refused to anger the gods by changing the name, having no trust in the half dozen or so name changing rituals that we happened upon. FAUX PAS - more a testimony to our behaviour while we owned it, not the boats general demeanor. We did change that boats name from WHIRLAWAY and I'm positive we angered the gods in the process. |

One of my favorite adapted Souix quotes. Whenever, the course of a daily sail, the sailor comes upon a scene that is strikingly beautiful, or sublime; a black thundercloud with the rainbow's glowing arch above the horizon, a white waterfall in the heart of a green gorge, a vast ocean tinged with the blood-red of the sunset; he pauses for an instant in the attitude of worship. He sees no need for setting apart one day in seven as a holy day, because to him all the days are God's days. Joe |

Boat Names and the Why of It....
"DSK" wrote So tell us what your boat's name is, and why you named it that. I renamed my Ericson ECHO because the previous name Intrepid was not only common, but for some reason everyone screwed it up. I decided on ECHO because it is short enough to fit on a narrow transom, it is a phonetic letter, and very easy to use on the radio. I'm an Electrical Engineer and my Ham radio Call Sign is N1EE. So far no one has screwed up the name on the radio or otherwise. My view is boat names belong on the transom and should be both easy to read at a great distance-which means a simple block font a large size and an uncomplicated name to both read and understand. My Etchells is named HOOT. I stole the name from a boat sold by a former Etchells skipper of mine. When he sold his previous boat, an Olson 30 named HOOT, the new owners insisted on keeping the name. HOOT has a wide reputation on the SF Bay and has had it's picture in Lat-38 many times. The was one photo that was either a cover of full page spread of it broaching under the Golden Gate Bridge. Since I'm on the east coast, I figured that was far enough away. For a future project, I have a cool graphic of an owl I want to paint on a white spinnaker. I have two Sunfishes, PATRIOT and a new one named THREAT that will be a loaner boat for visiting friends. I named PATRIOT after the sail I chose for the boat which was red, white, and blue. Being a Patriots fan, it was an easy choice. When I bought the second boat, I wanted a name that would complement the first. I thought of SCUD, which means move very quickly or hastily, and the military association between the two missiles is obvious, however I didn't like the sound of it. I chose THREAT because of the current poliltical situation where PATRIOTs are fighting THREATs, both foreign and domestic. |
