Sailboat do-over!

Imagine if you could go back in time and undo one or more of your
sailboat purchases. What would you change. Although I got a lot out of
my low cost Catalina 27, I'd buy another sailboat if I had to do it
over again. Obviously the "time" is a factor in our boats and the
Catalina was right for me as a first boat in many ways. Still, if I
could change things...

So what changes would you make? What purchases were less than ideal?
Did you fall for the wrong boat in your younger years?

Unlike you..... I have never regretted the purchase of any boat. I would not
change my mind on any of them....from my first inflatable canoe I bought
with my paper delivery money at 9 years of age, the many boats since
including my commercial fishing boats I owned to my current sailboat.

The Catalina 27 is a POS... I tried to tell you back then but you wouldn't
listen to reason. Then you slammed the Benneteaus and as fate would have it
.... ended up buying one.

You don't know what you want because you have no experience outside of
daysails on the LIS and thus purchase based on other's opinions and how good
it will look at the dock.

Until you understand that a sailboat purchase is made from the heart... your
losing streak on stepping stones will continue like a repetitive nightmare.

Back when??? I never spoke to you before or soon after buying the 27.
That said she was a lot of fun and cost nearly zero to own. A tall rig
version might be a better pic. She was bullet proof, but undercanvased
for the LIS. On the other hand, she made sense in that regard for the
first two seasons. I think it's fare to say that I've enjoyed each of
my boats more and more as performance has increased. The 35s5 is
probably the logical end to my boat buying until I crave something for
a much different type of sailing...long distance cruising, day-sailing
only or liveaboard...the latter appears to be our plan.
Meanwhile, my 1973 Catalina 27 cost 5K and was better built than your
Nordica with NO doubt. Even sadder...she was nearly as fast as the
Nordica. Then again, in all fairness to the Nordica, the Catalina 30
costs more.

I've never regretted the purchase of any of the boats I've owned. I have
regretted selling them. The biggest regret was selling my Windrider, because
it would be fun to sail on the lake where I teach. However, it looks like
I'll be getting a Hobie soon, so that'll make up for it I guess.

Oh Pulheeeeze... try a reality check would ya. Your cabin needed to be
reinforced due to massive flexing. It had a max of 1/4" of glass on the
hull. You had a foul A4..Click Click.W-h-i-i-r-r-r-r-r-r...BOOM! The deck
space was non existent. The boat sailed like seagull on Quaaludes. When you
stepped aboard it heeled enough to dip a rail. You could barely squeeze into
the entryway.... and you had to walk thru the head for the privilege of
sleeping on a 5' bunk that sweats worse than you after a three mile waddle
to the fridge. It's was a piece of junk like all your vessels including your
latest purchase of a styless, look-alike margarine container with fake teak
veneer you tried to convince us was wood until we set you straight...dock
condo. You'll never have a live aboard.... and you'll never live aboard.
You'll never leave the LIS and despite your claims to greater goals... will
sail on a sewage lagoon for the rest of your life.

My fine vessel on the other hand has sailed further than you've dreamed of
travelling. I have actually lived aboard my vessel comfortably for nine
years. The reality is that since I've owned my vessel for so long, I have
not only had the time to review it's faults in a variety of conditions...
but the ability to effect change, removal, renovation and repair.

While I know in great detail how my vessel will behave in a wide variety of
sea states and wind conditions.... you have no clue about the abilities or
limitations of any of your pitiful stepping stones since you have never left
the harbour.

This alone makes my boat stand head & shoulders above whatever boat you
might own.

That's what it's about. What I remember about the boats I've owned is
the good times I've had aboard. No boat I've owned was perfect and I
would change things about each of them, however, at the time, they
were the best choices. The quest for the perfect boat is a fools
quest unless funds are completely unlimited and maybe even then.

The first boat I owned (half owned) was a Sunfish. We used to sail it off
the coast of north county San Diego. We started in Del Mar (and a couple of
times from Encinitas) and took it to La Jolla, where we beached it, had
lunch at an all-you-can-eat Chinese place, then hitchhiked back up the coast
with the Sunfish. It was a great diversion from school.

Yeah, it was pretty amusing. Of course, the only people who would stop were
those with vans or pickups. Sometimes we'd have a wait an hour or so. Of
course, this was the early 70s, when something like this would have been
possible. We did get a lot of strange looks, and a cop stopped once, but he
couldn't find anything illegal and finally left us alone. (SD cops had a rep
for being quite aggressive those days.)
