86% of RN's pass it first time:

http://www.ncsbn.org/pdfs/NCLEX_fact_sheet.pdf

Why Must You Take the NCLEX-RNŽ Exam?

The NCLEX-RNŽ exam is prepared by the National Council of State Boards of
Nursing (NCSBN). Each state requires that you pass this exam to obtain a
license to practice as a registered nurse. The designation registered nurse
or R.N. indicates that you have proven to your state board of nursing that
you can deliver safe and effective nursing care. The NCLEX-RNŽ exam is a
test of minimum competency and is based on the knowledge and behaviors that
are needed for the entry-level practice of nursing. This exam tests not only
your knowledge, but also your ability to make competent nursing judgments.

What Is Entry-Level Practice of Nursing?

In order to define entry-level practice of nursing, the National Council
conducts a job analysis study every three years to determine what
entry-level nurses do on the job. The kinds of questions they investigate
include: In which clinical settings does the beginning nurse work? What
types of care do beginning nurses provide to their patients? What are their
primary duties and responsibilities? Based on the results of this study,
National Council adjusts the content and level of difficulty of the test to
accurately reflect what is happening in the workplace.

What the NCLEX-RNŽ Exam Is NOT

It is not a test of achievement or intelligence. It is not designed for
nurses who have years of experience. The questions do not involve high-tech
clinical nursing or equipment. It is not predictive of your eventual success
in the career of nursing. You will not be tested on all the content that you
were taught in nursing school.

Good Lord, I just ran through the questions on a sample test and passed.

To each their own!

Amen!

They are the same, Doug. She's now a licensed RN. She'll spend a couple

Nurses are treated like teachers in this country. Employers know
that they are dedicated type people and they take advantage of that
fact by underpaying them and screwing them on retirement plans,
vacation time etc. My wife got out and is now on the road/working out

LOL, she and her fellow graduates were offered low 60's all the way up
to her present salary which was not the top offer, but also featured
loan forgivemess. NYU Med Ctr. is paying 65K. Roosevelt offered 63 and
change. BTW, loan forgiveness is 500 per month, but is taxed hard.
There's a huge shortage. Suzanne got calls from 15 hospitals and had
many interviews well before she graduated. Some of the women at her
hospital are pulling 6 figures after 4 years. Wanna guess what my best
friend, who's been a nurse practitioner for 3 years is making?

National average for an RN is 45K or so. This is NY, and few places pay
below 60K.

Bob, nice try. Loan forgiveness is taxed as ordinary income, but if you had
an inkling of financial savvy, you could deduct the cost of education as an
expense.

That bonus is small. Most signing bonuses I know of are about 10K for
nurses.

What hospital is she working at?

Monster has job listings for experienced OR nurses at 80K$ in Westchester

Congrats to her. I managed to squeeze in 20 years with a local hospital
doing mechanical work. I got to be the proverbial "fly on the wall" and now
I don't begrudge good nurses whatever they make.
BTW - I once had to babysit a 650 pound corpse on the midnight shift in a
morgue. I drew short straw, and had the ghastly duty of keeping the body
packed in ice because it wouldn't fit in a drawer and no one would
claim/take it. Technically, I didn't get laid in a morgue, but I did feel
f***ed.

She certainly works hard and the nigbt shifts have their own

but that's too far away for her.

Many of my hours there were overnighters. The graveyard shift is a special
bunch with a whole different feel. The camaraderie runs deeper, and everyone
seems to have a better grasp of the team concept, especially between
departments (e.g., between security, engineering, and the ER staff). One
night, for instance, a couple of drunk bikers came into the ER. I had been
demolishing some O2 lines in the area; work that had to be done overnight.
One guy was (superficially) injured and for some reason, his friend got
rowdy, and decided to sucker punch a security guard who was a good friend of
mine, I didn't think twice about swinging a 24" aluminum pipe wrench across
the back of his legs. I didn't want to kill or even seriously hurt him, but
I did want him on the floor while the RNs radioed for security and police
backup . He actually apologized and thanked me after he sobered up, with no
broken bones and only a nifty looking bruise across one hamstring, he
realized I could have removed his head with the same swing.
I think, with less people on the clock, those who are on realize how much
more they depend on each other.
