Bar's of the BVI
I've been getting free sailing magazines for years.
This year Yachting Magazine, sent me one enjoyable issue, the Oct 2005 Boat Show Issue. Lots of boat pictures including some gorgeous sailing yachts. In it there was an article written about the ten best Bar's in the BVI, and it was obvious the writer didn't sound like \ she had been to any or all of these places To rectify this great wrong, I think we should spread the straight word about these above water dives before the season gets fully underway. The article talks at great length about The Willie T. Thornton, as a great drinking bar, while I found that while at Norman Island, it was better eat there and hit Billy Bones whose famous rum drinks guaranteed a good time. I like any place with a hammock, so Billy Bones is high on my list of places that I like in the islands, while the "Willie T" I would skip as the food was just OK. Speaking of hammocks, another favorite of mine is the Soggy Dollar, which I prefer over Foxy's. You have to know where the reefs are, and have a reasonable draft to anchor in close. The harbor "range" is gone but there are two red floats marking the entrance. I particularly like the ring game, where a nail is placed in a tree and a piece of string with a ring on the end is swung to try and hook the ring on the nail--straight on doesn't do it, you have to arc it in. One place the author mentions is a bar that's not on the water. On the East End of St John is Skinny Legs. Anyone care to comment on it? Since it is hard to get to, I would not have put it on the list, unless I included GPS coordinates. I'd like what I read about Heidi's on Honeymoon Beach on St Thomas's Water Island. If I was anchoring out near Charlotte Amalie, I'd make a point of going there by dink. Usually, I high tail it away from St Thomas as fast as I can. What is your favorite island bar? |

Sorry but Billy Bones closed about 3 years ago. The girl's parents and
family who were the real owners of Norman Island kicked her off. They sort of told her not to open the joint in the first place. It has since reopened under another name. |

When we went, Billy Bones was advertised to us as
a family place. We arrived with the kids for dinner and the entertainment was tequila body shots at the bar. Quit entertaining. The owner came over and apologized. Soggy Dollar was pretty good too. We stayed in White Bay two days. My son found a twenty lying on the bottom where we were moored. I think that's why he wanted to stay another day. Honestly, if I have good company, I'd rather sit in the cockpit and drink than go to any bar. S. Just tuned in to this thread, so here's my two cents worth My favorite bar was on Scrub Island--directly north of the anchorage at Marina Cay. A place called Donovan's Reef. Anyone know if it is still there? It was the only structure on the entire island. Max |

If you are single you might want to go out. Most
people are couples, so unless you want to meet new people I'd rather hang out on the boat myself. And cook for myself too! The BVI doesn't have that much appeal to me. I'd rather go off the beaten track. "NotPony" wrote When we went, Billy Bones was advertised to us as a family place. I hread saw that they were building something
over there. I like Scrub Island. They were selling lots so I expect some construction has taken place. You know of course they all have "tourist" names. I just luv some of the
rasta bush names..... Raz, Melody, Irie... my favourite was "Skeletor". I always introduced myself by my bush name... I be Mooron! ha ha ha BVI is getting to be like Jamaica.... overrun with Americans bringing the worst out in the locals. When I stayed there, I always arranged to visit with local families and help out with chores, building things, gardening or whatever. I got to go fishing with them and even managed to supply the local restaurant with the "catch of the day" occasionally, which would net me a free supper. My favourite was to set camp at Brewer's and charter fallow. That got me a variety of vessels for short trips of a day or more at off season rates. I'd load the boats with folks from the campground who normally wouldn't have the opportunity or cash to get out sailing. I bring the boat back on time and clean... so the next charter is easy. Lots of things had changed on my last trip there.... none of which I liked. Heh... How come nobody mentioned the Roti Palace in Road Town. Conch Rotis with an icy cold beer. Brewers Bay is one bay over from Cane Garden Bay....
It's marked as a no go zone for charter vessels due to a reef in the center. Lots of room though. CM "Bart Senior" .@. wrote in message ... You mentioned camping some years ago. Where is Brewers? Strawberry ran the t-shirt business attached to the bar/restaurant--she's quite a bit younger than Sydney--and Glendon is her young son. He's a huge fan of the Detroit Redwings. I traded him a Redwings jersey for several t-shirts. Unsure if they are related to Sydney, but I wouldn't be surprised. When we were there it was Sydney, the wife, kids doing it all. Best lobster ever. Lots of dark rum on the honor bar system and then the required argument with Sydney when he pads the bill. He was out lobstering most of the day, so we dealt with Strawberry. What we didn't know was that the painkillers were already mixed with rum. We thought they were just the mix, so we added more Cruzan to every glass. Little wonder we all passed out back on the boat. He backs off and still makes out. Then talks us into helping him haul his boat the next morning. He was cordial and rather behind the scenes when we were there. In fact he let us pick our lobsters for dinner from his catch of the day. Strawberry said he "never" lets anyone do that. Guess we caught him on a good day. Max |
