Jeeze Thom, is the US media that censored? There were indeed many cries
of indignation throuoout the world about both the British treatment of
alleged IRA and the IRA's indiscrimanate tactics.

However that's beside the point, you seem to be using one crime to
justify another. Is torture ok because the Inquisitors, no doubt good
Catholics all, used it?

Thom, they were in British gaols on British soil so they were subject
to British rules of detention......the reason the US has its captives
in Cuba is to deny them the natural justice to which they'd be
entitled if held in the US.

This is true. They are various kinds of illegal combatants captured outside
the USA and tried in/by the country where they were captured. Normally they
would have been exeuted there too. However, they were turned over to us
because each may have information useful to our war on terror. We hold them
outside the USA because they have no rights under US law and we want to keep
it that way.

That, sadly appears to be the truth. That sort of attitude is precisely
the sort of thing that the extremists dedicated to the destruction of
democracy and imposition of their own narrow religious viewpoint seize
and use as an argument to the ignorant to convince them that the USA is
an evil imperialistic tyrant. Perhaps they are correct.

From their point of view they are correct. From a Jewish point of view Rome
was an evil tyrant because Rome would not allow them to stone heretics like
Jesus to death. From my viewpoint, religious fanatics of all stripes are
like pedophiles in that they cannot be cured of their disease and must,
therefore, be imprisoned or killed to protect rational society. The USA has
indeed drifted far from our constitutional origins, our government ever more
tyranical - all due to religious fanaticism. Religious freaks decided the
government should save us from drink - then abolished freedom after freedom
to protect the tyrants trying to enforce that idiocy. Today we find a War on
Drugs doing the same. Oh well ....
