trajedy in marina del rey

Last night on the news was a report that a man fell overboard from a boat
called Merry Mary (I assume that's the spelling) in Marina Del Rey and died
during the sunset series races. They also showed another boat that had
capsized and been dismasted.

Yet there's nothing on the news today, either on TV, radio or online. It
seems strange that a boat could have capsized in the calm conditions
yesterday. It's even more strange that the story was pulled from the news.

Did anyone hear about this? Any links to the story?

Sailor falls overboard and dies at hospital

MARINA DEL REY - A man pulled from the Marina del Rey breakwater after
falling off the side of a boat today died today at a hospital,
authorities said.

The man was reported in the water "where the ocean meets the marina' at
6:42 p.m., said Ed Pickett of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

He was in full cardiac arrest when lifeguards on a fire department boat
pulled him from the water, Pickett said. He was taken to Daniel Freeman
Marina Hospital where he died.

Several other sailors in the area were trying to help the man out of
the water when lifeguards arrived, Pickett said.

The man was the only passenger on the boat he fell from. It was not
clear how he went overboard, Pickett said.

Here's some info I got from a friend that was racing last night:

"LAX recorded 18knots at 7pm with gusts in the low-20's and it was somewhat
windier out from shore. I think the waves were the bigger problem. It was
the roughest I've seen it for any of the wed night races in the last 3
years. There were at least 2 dismastings, one boat capsized, one sunk,
people overboard from several boats, and lots of sail damage. Dock
scuttlebutt was that the boat with the fatality was a Moore 24 and the boat
that sunk was a MacGregor 26. We got soaked but enjoyed the ride, and had
some really great surfs even without the spinnaker."

JG April 21st 05 08:54 PM

I guess that's heavy air for So Cal. Up here it's a light day.

Yes, it's true that MDR is a light wind area. However, I think the waves
and the fact that it was the first race of season probably played bigger
roles (lots of new racers and sailors with rusty skills).

Unlike my friends in the bay area people rarely wear PFD's around here. I'm
sure there'll be a lot of debate about that.

JG April 21st 05 09:54 PM

Personally, I think it's high foolishness to not wear PDFs. I don't see any
good reason not to, especially given the good quality and high comfort of
PDFs currently available.

I know for sure that one has a much higher chance of being boarded for an
impromptu inspection if one isn't wearing one... at least up here.

Your moral standards are not acceptable to the Usenet community. You should
ask yourself if *you* are more important than the ng. Personally, I think
that you should leave until you are ready to state unequivocally(sp?) that
you do not report people to their ISP's.

As I see it, you probably have made complaints about people who have
suggested that you are a homo. Quite frankly, your posts do suggest that
you have some serious sexual issues. I don't think that making complaints

That's complete bull****. Firstly, the newsgroup is not being destroyed.
Just because you and a couple of other people don't have the intelligence to
ignore obvious trolls isn't my problem or fault.

Secondly, who the f*ck are you to tell me about my own self-worth when you
seem to have so little of your own. And, you certainly have no business or
authority to tell me where or what to post. If you don't like my posts, you
can kill file me, report me, or bash your head against the wall for all I

Thirdly, you claim that I have "probably" made complaints about people
calling me names, but you're such a wimp that you can't even make a
definitive statement about it. If you believe that I have "serious sexual
issues," that's certainly your business. How have you come to that belief?
Please post the evidence, and while you're attempting to dig that up, keep a
record of other people's sexual issues. I'm sure we would all benefit from
your effort.

Fourthly, I think you're either seriously stupid, or you have a slow news
service, since I have rarely posted people's header information and
certainly not recently. Nor have I made comments to the effect that someone
is gay, straight, or twisted sexually.

Promoting these lies is not only juvenile, it also smack of pure

Really? How so? You're still posting. I'm still posting. Other long-time
members are still posting. Please demonstrate that it's being destroyed.
Mostly, it sounds like you're whining because you don't know how to use a
kill file.

Just because you and a couple of other people don't have the intelligence

to
ignore obvious trolls isn't my problem or fault.

It's never your problem, is it?

Other people's problems are not mine. Are they yours? Are you the keeper of
righteousness??

Secondly, who the f*ck are you to tell me about my own self-worth when
you
seem to have so little of your own. And, you certainly have no business
or
authority to tell me where or what to post. If you don't like my posts,

you
can kill file me, report me, or bash your head against the wall for all I
care.

Hmmmmm!

Hmm... but you don't do it. Why not?

Thirdly, you claim that I have "probably" made complaints about people
calling me names, but you're such a wimp that you can't even make a
definitive statement about it.

OK, Let me make a definitive statement. You have made complaints to
ISP's.
That makes you a squealer in my eyes.

And, I say you don't know what you're talking about. You're still being a
wimp IMHO.

It is clear to me that you have not been to boarding school, or been in
the
army, police, or fire service. If you had spent time in any of these
institutions, then you would understand that squealing is never, ever,
acceptable. You would understand that there is no greater insult than
being
called a "squealer".

I certainly have not been to boarding school. That doesn't happen much in
the US. As for the rest, you again don't have a clue.

In my view it is, even in relatively calm conditions, especially on the SF
bay. What's your view?

What mindset is that? Do you go out of your way to be stupid around the
authorities?

Is it stupid to sail without a lifejacket?

That's complete bull****. Firstly, the newsgroup is not being destroyed.

Yes it is, Jonathan.

One per person on the boat, but only kids are required to wear them.
