Quick Trip Report--Barcelona

I finished writing my trip report for my BVI trip. I'll post it soon.

My second trip to Spain was interesting also.

During a side trip to Majorca I spotted the schooner I cruised
to Hawaii in back in 1997. It was docked at the harbor in Palma.
That was a surprise and a treat to see. I got a picture but the
yacht was partially blocked by passing traffic and the seawall.

My one day sailing was boring. Light winds on a Bavaria 36.
These are boat that use thimbles and crimp swages for their
lifelines. No pelican hooks or quality swqage fittings. Overall,
the quality was slightly lower than I would have expected of a
boat of this class.

I did see an interesting one design fleet. The boats were about
28 feet long with open transoms and swing keels. Most were
dry sailed. I saw only five in slips. The total fleet size was
about 25 boats. I did not take any pictures. Does anyone have
an idea of what they could be?

During the tour of the Maritime Center, I took dozens of photos.
That was perhaps the most interesting part of the trip. I'll post those
next week.

Damn... didn't realize you were headed to Majorca. I have some friends who
own a great little restaurant there. You have to order a day ahead, but it's
worth it.

Too bad you couldn't go over and check it out. That boat really gets
around... Hawaii to the Med!

I visited Palma briefly, but it was a long time ago. One of those places
I've been meaning to get back to.

Interesting. The Bavarias of a few years ago were pretty good. Maybe
this was a cheapo fix-it by the charter co? Or maybe they're suffering
from competition for slim profits in the boatbuilding industry?

Could they have been these?

There's also a Laser sportboat about that size, or it could be a locally
produced boat. The Spanish have some very capable designers & builders.

Cool... what sort of exhibits did they have, like a museum?

I loved it there. I can see myself living there. Real Estate did not seem
overly expensive. Comparable to the States.

I was told they were considered a notch below other boats made over
there. Perhaps they do a better job on the exports to this country. I
haven't seen any over here. I picked the Bavaria, because I hadn't
sailed one.

Nice looking boat. Similar hull design. However, those have
a fixed keel. The ones I saw were swing keel.

Exactly it was a museum. Full size galley. There were programable
headsets. Punch in a display number and get briefed in your language.

For example I learned the galley were often smelled before they were
seen. Three men per oar makes for a smelly boat! Can you imagine
smelling a boat 2 miles away?

Most exhibits were models. Some very old fishing boats with forward
raked unstayed masts supporting a single lateen spar--somewhat like
an Arab Dhow. There was an interesting sailing raft. Much of the
writen information I could not read was writen in Spanish and Catalan.

I have tons of picture of the models. Give me a week to publish them.
I'm tied up for the next four days.
