Best Deep Water Sailing Radio

If you were to have a VHF and one other 2 way Radio system when you
head out into the middle of the pacific ocean....What other Radio would
you have, and why?

Thanks for your suggestions and important information about SAILING.

You mean like SSB? If so, you better have a license.

VHF is almost useless in the middle of an ocean. It is a line of sight
radio. Not very long distances. You could try to hail a ship before it
runs you down, but they probably aren't monitoring it anyway.

SSB is the mainstay radio of the oceans. At least on the vessels I have
been on. Lots of hammies around the world can relay weather info etc to a
vessel in the middle of an ocean. You can participate by checking in with a
group of boats as you cross on a daily basis. Everyone reports the weather
they have seen. Very helpful.

I'd have a ham set. It includes SSB and ties into a world wide relay net.

Thanks for your suggestions and important information about SAILING.

Is having a radio the same thing as sailing?

Actually, a number of people have expressed admiration for my boat(s).
Most people that walk by the dock stop, look, and smile.

Most sailors here avoid saying bad things about other sailor's boats; in
the same way that most polite people will avoid saying bad things about
other people's children. OTOH you feel a need to brag constantly about
how your boat is so strong, so fast, etc etc. Sort of like the way
Bobsprit always had to brag about his toys.

If you know your history, it wasn't a question of backing down, the
defenders had little choice. They realized that if they fled, they would be
easily cut down by Mexican cavalry, as indeed some of the defenders did, and
were. Maybe the analogy is fitting, OTOH.

You misunderstood. Just a statement of fact. The defenders expected relief.
They put up a valiant fight against overwhelming odds, but they would have
retreated had they the opportunity, they didn't have that opportunity, their
lack of mounts would have made a retreat from Mexican cavlary suicidal.

You missed the point John... they did not undertake the option of Surrender.
They took a stand and defended it to the death.
It is the backbone of American essence.... negotiation was not an option.
Take Ground and Stand your ground. The battle was lost but the war was
won... the enemy now had a benchmark to comprehend the lengths to which
their opponent might venture to defend their values. Commendable, Courageous
and to the man.... worthy of note.

One word John... Valour!
By situation, by choice or by coincidence. It's a matter of character.

It's not difficult at all, especially for the lower level license. There are

Yeah... that's my view on it as well.

.... it's against my TOS! :-)

Does that stand for Terminally Opposite Sex?

I can't comment... that would be against the TOS as well.. :-)

I hate having only one cable service provider in my area..... if one of
these whiners gets me booted it would mean the end of any internet
connection since the local providers are combined.... cable phone etc.
Essentially it would be possible for persons on this group to have my
service terminated. It has effectively censored my ability to communicate on
anything other than a placid and non-confrontational method. Rather a boring
and ridiculous method of posting to this group..... unless you need to read
my posts to get some shut eye.

Let's say it's a good thing I work with a crew of red-necks and can express
myself on-site, without fear of somebody running to the police and claiming
I've verbally abused them.

Oh well..... don't expect much more than a few bland posts from me. I've
felt the jack-boot of what an abuse complaint can do.

There is no solution..... my ISP provider is the only one in the area. I've
discussed this with them in person. They are aware of the situation. No
matter what other service I use to access the Usenet.... they are
ultimately the sole provider and thus a complaint from someone who has
already filed an abuse complaints against me... can easily file another if I
use my provider to access that service. The folks at my ISP have been nice
about it but they can't do much about big company policy.

I'll proceed under the hobble of censorship.... unlike my abuse

There IS a solution. Some newsservers insulate you from illegitmate complaints.
Check the headers on my posts and see if you can trace me back to any ISP.
Ganz has been writing abuse complaints to my new newserver like there's no
tomorrow without results because none of his complaints is legit and I've read
the TOS and obey the rules. My new server believes and fights for freedom
of speech and freedom of expression. They don't censur people because
they have something to say others don't like to hear.

I don't see any way you can get a complaint to your ISP if somebody cannot
prove you were the one posting to a newsgroup. The headers are all mush and
the complainer will not be able to tie you to the news server. You do NOT have
to live under the heel of the likes of Ganz and Haight.
