Excuse me Doug,

That should have been a B instead of a D.
Glad you knew who I meant.

Every colonist fighting the British was guilty of treason in that war..
George Washington would likely have been hanged had he been captured.

Doug,

Do you consider D. Arnold a traitor? He severed with distinction before
going against his Army Oath.

Do you mean Benedict Arnold?

Heck yes he is a traitor. Among other things, he was commissioned as a
general officer by the British after attempting to hand over West Point
(an important strategic fort at the time). You're right, before that he
served with great distinction... some would say he was the best American
general of the Revolutionary War.

There is a big difference between treason and desertion. Benedict Arnold
did not merely desert his post. He actively warred against the United
Stated.

Yet another point:
Military personnel fleeing to Canada from Stateside posts aren't even
deserters. They're AWOL. To be a deserter, you have to flee your post in
a war zone.

The point of what Thom was asking (if I understood correctly) "was
Benedict Arnold guilty of treason against the United States." What he
did was far above (or below) & beyond desertion.

You are incorrect, again. He was never given a command by the
British.

The British provided handsomely for Arnold, but never completely
trusted him. He was never given an important military command. They
moved to London where he found no job, some admiration and even some
contempt. He moved his family to Canada where he reentered the
shipping business. The Tories there disliked him and had no use for
him, and eventually he returned his family to London.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benedict_Arnold

"Arnold was appointed brigadier beneral in the British Army and engaged
Continental forces on a few occasions. One significant battle occurred
on January 5, 1781 when Richmond, Virginia was burned by British naval
forces led by Arnold."

YMMV

First and foremost I wish to commend the role of the
USA in the promotion of democracy in the world.
Canada however has contributed to the protection of
democracy on many occasions.. the most significant being..
sending more than 200,000 soldiers to Europe, suffering
more than 50,000 casualties, building tanks, cannons,
fighter planes.. starting in 1939.. and continuing until
the end of World War II in 1945.
Whereas the USA did not enter that war until the
December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour.
Canadians are brave and willing to share their
resources to protect democracy.
