USVI Bart's trip photos
Here are a few pictures. It was a new camera and I
accidentally took a few movies instead of pictures. I was trying to zoom in all these cases thinking I was taking still photos. I have no way to upload these videos. I have two short videos of whales that actually show more than a still photo would. I also have a few short videos of Mirabella and Mirabella V. Email me if you want me to send them to you. It may take as while as I'm travelling for the next few weeks. http://community.webshots.com/user/islandman112 Bart |
Nice shots Bart..... Man that is one friggin' big sailboat. How did you

When I was at the Indians last, some guy climbed the bigger of them and
almost fell off. He got scraped up pretty badly. -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Bart Senior" wrote in message ... Here are a few pictures. Made a great shot. I had it professionally printed (my own printer was junk at the time) and it hangs on the wall of my den. The Indians are a great spot to shoot nubile young things as well, but you probably already know that. Max |
Mirabella V is a big boat. It made boats 100' or
longer look little next to it. Regarding the poacher: I spent the last night on a day mooring at Buck Island, the one south of St Thomas. Day-moorings mean you can only stay one full day--right??? I'm sure it doesn't mean day only--eh? Anyway, the poacher came over early thinking he'd be the only one there. He saw us but figured we wouldn't say anything. So we got the numbers on the boat, which he seemed to be trying to conceal at first. I decided to take some pictures and caught him in mid-cast and then dink'ed over to confront him. He looked white but talked like a Jamacian. Fortunately, one of my crew Sean lived in Jamacia for two years and could talk the lingo. We asked the poacher to release the fish, but he just got angry, and said, "What you wan me to do man, rob people?" I guess he thought that was a good argument. He looked like the type that would rob people. He also said he was just getting bait fish. But from what I saw, from a distance, he was throwing away the bigger fish. At one point he seemed angry and slapped some of the fish by the tail hard to kill them and then dumped them overboard. I guessed they were parrot fish and not good for sale to the marine aquarium market. He kept the fish in a cooler and seemed to be trying to keep them alive and healthy. The all looked to be very small fish. Anyway, I was not happy that he seemed to be routinely raping this prime snorkling location, where fishing was prohibited, for personal gain. I'm going to try and contact the locate someone who will take action against him. After this he motored to the other snorkling bay on the other side to continue his dirty work. I spotted him working on the water near the French Quarter, but there was no sign of his boat or the cooler he used to store the fish. "Capt. Mooron" wrote Nice shots Bart..... It is not too hard. Except the airlines lost my
bags and I was stuck in shorts and short sleeves at the airport. Anyway, I'm off to California soon. "katysails" wrote Cool...didn't you just hate coming back to the cold? |
Rough current there.
If you swim off the point on the up current side, there is all kinds of activity in the standing wave. Some big ones too. We had a big Tarpon hanging out under the boat at Norman Island. I will be posting some pictures of that later. Fish seem to like that. "JG" wrote When I was at the Indians last, some guy climbed the bigger of them and almost fell off. When we in Cane Garden, there were surfers. Fortunately, we were far enough
back to avoid most of the swell. -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Bart Senior" wrote in message ... Rough current there. Hey John - So who won your contest? Its not nice to announce a 500
point prize and then disappear! John Cairns wrote: "Bart Senior" wrote in message ... Here are a few pictures. It was a new camera and I accidentally took a few movies instead of pictures. Bart Senior wrote: Here are a few pictures. Bart Nice photos Bart. Were you sailing aboard Maribella? Nice looking motor sailor "Ketch1" About the poacher, you should of called the coppers and held him there until they arrived. I can understand a man selling rare fish if its feeding his family, but to kill bigger fish for no cause but the lack of profit... shows he is ignorant and has no regard what so ever for anyone else. Sad situation indeed. It would be smarter putting the locals to work in a aquaculture co-op. Anyway looks like you had a nice sail. Joe |

Just the pics are pretty impressive. I like the one of Mirabella in profile with the cruise ships in the background... gives a sense of the sheer size. It's actually a pretty boat. BTW I agree about the jib lead. If it was really all the way forward, and the foot was that stretched with the leach flopping, that was the wrong sail. Was there not a 2nd track forward, or some other way to lead the sheet? Email me if you want me to send them to you. Really unfair, actually, the place is almost completely obscure, I had to look up MAPS of the Caribbean to find any references to it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isla_Aves Good description, and I stand corrected, I wrote that this tiny little spit of land belonged to France, wikpedia claims it's Venezuelan, which would explain the presence of the Venezuelan Navy in that area. The only reason I took the pics-5 or 6-was we couldn't make it out with binoculars, the 75-300 zoom is IS. http://community.webshots.com/photo/...86047357hWKkrK John Cairns John Cairns wrote: "Bart Senior" wrote in message ... I wish I was sailing on Mirabella. Mirabella V is $250,000 a week to
charter. |
Wow! What did she cost to build?
