We don't plan to swim at all. I am deathly afraid of irukanji, mostly
because they are so tiny and not easily seen, like the box jellyfish. We
met a gent whose lovely spouse nearly died from contact with one. There is
some evidence that they are present in small quantities off the Florida
coast now.

that Paris is the cleaner of the two.

We stay at a place called the Hotel de Tourisme (sp) right near the
Eiffel Tower / Champs de Mars

You were right near the Palais de Chaillot, then. You should have gone
into the maritime museum there. Amazing collection of sailing &
seafaring stuff.

I have been through the maritime museum in paris. Great displays. I love
Napoleons Yacht. It is good to be emperor. Another really good one is the
one we have in Newport News Virginia.

Reminds me of when the news broke that the French deliberately sank the
Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrier. It was the first French navel victory in
hundreds of years.

I bet so... I don't recall that one but I do remember Louis XIV's
galley... it was in pretty good shape for a wooden boat it's age... I
guess since he was the "Sun King" he had to have a power (rowing) boat,
otherwise he'd have been the Wind King.

Also they had a couple of very large models (30' or so... looked big
enough to climb inside & sail) of ships-of-the-line. While they did not
win at Trafalgar, they did win at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay
(Admiral de Grasse, Battle of The Capes, look it up).

Another thing I liked about that museum is both the tremendous span of
time covered, literally over a thousand years... and the wide range of
maritime interests. It's the only maritime museum I've been too that
covered the history of port improvements as well as ships.

Thanks for the link. Looks like a very cool place to visit. Since all
the improvements to the waterfront for the Olympics, I'm kind of
surprised Barcelona wasn't higher in the running for the next America's
Cup venue. But then Marseille is closer to Switzerland ;)
