Heh Jeff..... donations?

http://www.davidappell.com/

"The United States still lags behind other countries in what it's giving for
tsunami relief. According to this MSNBC article, Japan is donating $500M
(about $4 per capita), Sweden is giving $75M (over $8 per capita), and the
U.S. is limping in with $350M, or just over $1 per capita.

These things matter. The U.S. fancies itself as the world's superpower. It
therefore has greater responsibilities than any other world country, and
that especially includes international aid (and not just military
conquests). The U.S. response to the tsunami has been sorely lacking, and is
only where it's at because the country has been shamed for its stinginess.

This is one of the worst disasters of modern times. We ought to be
contributing a billion dollars (still only 0.009% of our GDP), at least, and
it should not have to be shaken out of us."

Whoa!!!

Wrong bourbon breath! Before my old knot instrument bit the dust,
when I was surfing down the face of large Gulf Stream waves, the
knot meter would occasionally peg on 12 knots.

Good one Neal! You're always good for a laugh! Of course, I can do 12
knots in a flat sea, all I need is about 22 knots of wind.

Twenty-two knots of wind and a MacGregor 65, maybe, but with your cat
you would have to toss everything overboard including the engines and
props to get that thing light enough to even come close to that speed.

Nope - honest truth - we did it a number of times when the boat was new.
Now there's so much crap on the boat (more distance trips with less
daysails) its a big thing when it goes over 10.5 knots. But my bigger
limitation is that I tend to reef at 20 knots of wind, a concession to
family cruising. Now if I kept the spinnaker up in strong winds, I
could get to 14 or 15.

You are correct that the stripped out version of my boat (one outboard,
tall rig, reduced weight, daggerboards) is a real screamer!

13.5 knots, on two occasions. Once under power (the mast was down), the
other time under sail. Both times were surfing down waves with a good
tail wind, about 25 knots.

As I mentioned, on the flat we've been to 12 knots a few times.

I've had more out of my monohull - under sail(of course), on many occasions.

The best was a very brief 15.2 during the RTI race a couple of years ago.

Sounds like fun. Of course, if you're racing I assume you have a full
crew and a lightened boat. I'm almost always shorthanded, and generally
assume I'm sindlehanded. My wife usually helps raising and lowering,
etc., but often I'm on deck alone - thus I reef early and don't carry
the chute in high winds. And whenever we're in open water the boat is
loaded for a month or more cruising.

I've been told that sister ships have done up to 17 knots, but that was
with the factory team on unused boats. Several owners claim around 15,
and as I've said the racing version is extreme, easily hitting 17-18
knots. But my needs are different.
