Where is this rule? The reference I have says that two vertical white
lights at the mast head is the signal for a tow or pushing a barge...
thre vertical lights if it exceeds 200 meters in length (which would be
a pretty darn big barge).

Doug King

Maybe not in Nealand, but you should check in the rule book. I think
you just confessed to hiring someone to take the test for you.

Michael December 8th 04 02:55 AM

C. is correct. The other answers all call for a stern light. The barge
being pushed would not have a sternlight, that would be found on the stern
of the pushing vessel.

I was doing it from memory while you had to look it
up. Besides, as the answers are written, C is NOT
a valid answer.

There is no such thing as a sidlight nor a speical flashing light.

B is the closets best answer.

Doug,
The question is asking about the barge, not the towboat. The three vertical
lights on the towboat would involve a towing astern configuration, not
towing/pushing ahead.

Rule 24 para f.....there's also a picture of same. but it helps to have
spent time on the Big Easy.

Memory doesn't count. A requirement is to always have a copy of ColRegs on
hand.

RULE 24 (f)(i)

[email protected] December 8th 04 03:17 PM

C is correct.

If you study the answers, each contains sidelights.
What else is required? Sternlights are not needed
since it is being towed ahead.
That gets you down to one possible choice.

[email protected] December 8th 04 03:21 PM

C is valid. And there is nothing wrong with looking answers up
in the book, if necessary. One requirement is that a copy of the
Navigation Rules must be carried on board.
This is an actual test question.

Nav December 8th 04 08:52 PM

No sternlight. The answer is C

Many of the tugs / barges / workboats on the Chessy have so many deck
lights on at night, you can't pick out the nav lights. Big ships also.

This problem is getting worse with time.
As someone who does considerable night time work, I'm noticing more and
more that for various types I have to note "type" first and then find
the running lights (especially difficult with newer locations for
sidelights)
One of the worst offenders are cruise ships.
