Does anyone have any information about alternative software which can
access the serial port feed from this receiver? And does anyone know if
you can actually receive Navtex with this box? I would prefer not to start
opening the box and soldering wires to speaker connections etc. Any help
appreciated.

Try WinWedge, it's works with any serial port.
